freedomlover is right. The plan to date hasn't worked. I support what we are trying to do, but that does not mean I want it to go on forever.
There needs to be a serious revision to the plan, Task, Conditions, Standards. A plan needs goals and a timeline otherwise there is no way to judge if the plan is working.
We cannot leave Iraq as it is, but we also cannot continue to handle Iraq as we have. Unfortunately, cheerleading has been mistaken for leadership to date. We, both the citizens of the USA and the soldiers, need direction. we need a leader to outline a plan for victory and then implement it. While 3000 KIA is a great cost to families and our nation, it is extremely light for a conflict involving this many troops and this period of time.
I would be all in favor of committing 250,000 additional troops to Iraq. Their mission would be to secure the borders and prevent foriegn fighters and supplies to enter the country. The troops that are already in cities and towns would eliminate the resistance, with their supply chain and reserve supply cut off at the border, I think this could be accomplished in 8 to 12 months. The training of the Iraqi military would continue, as a battalion is trained, it would relieve a US battalion on the border. As the cities and towns are cleaned up, the US forces could be replaced by Iraqi police. I think it possible to hand over the country of Iraq in 2.5 years. Tis is an over-simplification of the plan, but I think the plan is defendable.
The most important factor in this is the Iraqi's. If they do not want what we are giving them, then the entire effort is doomed from the beginning.
I think you will find that once the foriegn fighters are eliminated, the sectarian violence will disappear as well. Hence, no civil war.
