No, I don't think we can solve their internal struggles militarily (unless we are prepared to beat one side or the other completely into obliviion) However, if we can create a stable government perhaps the Sunni's, Shites and Kurds will finally see its in thier best interest to form some sort of coilition. Perhaps, they do need a Saddam type leader, but one who doesn't resort to terror to maintian his authority.
The question is.....can the Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds see themselves and the others as Iraqi citizens? If their alliances and allegiances are stronger else where, this is going to be tough.

BTW, I've heard some suggest that we should choose a side and, indeed, beat the other into oblivion.....not sure how acceptable that would be.

As far as my over reacting is concerned I believe Iraq is the first battle in the latest Crusade. Yes, I believe its a religious war and although I realize that may not be politically correct I do think the radical muslims are searching for world domination. I think the leaders, like leaders everywhere, are using the religion as a means to an end. Perhaps they do sincerely believe the world should be muslim or maybe they just want to be in charge and are using Islam to that end. However, I firmly believe if we pull out of Iraq leaving it in the mess its in Iran will take over before our last trooper is out of the country. I believe Iran will use that as a stepping stone to further conquest, linking up with other muslim radicals thoughout the world. They have already almost completely taken control of Europe by merely becoming the fastest growing religion and religious group in the area.

Thats my opinion at any rate.
Thanks
Clearly, the world is getting smaller and I think the last 10 years of conflict is a result of friction between the West and the Muslim world. The question is....does it have to come down to a knock down drag em' out fight or can we overcome our differences, marginalize the extremist, etc.

I don't know.

Stormn
I fear that we cannot ever coexist with Muslims. Their goal for the last 1000 years has been to spread the faith, by the sword if necessary. I think to them time is meaningless and they are not concerned with the short term. Despite what some will try to tell us I believe Islam is as far removed from a peaceful religion as Buddhist are from militarism (too bad Buddhist are not recruiting more than they do, now there is a religion that offends no one)

As far as the factions in Iraq seeing themselves as Iraqis, now that may be a long hard road. Europe went through the same process with the idea of city states and kingdoms and fiefdoms. I don't know. I would not want to be in Bush's shoes (any president really, none of them are ever liked by everybody are they?). But I really do believe we cannot leave Iraq until something approaching peaceful coexistance has been achieved.

I thought we were supporting the Shites since Saddam was a Sunni and the Sunni minority was terrorizing the Shites and Kurds. Lets go ahead, destroy the Sunni leadership, install the Shites and then destroy the Kurd leadership.

By the way, George, I am not listening to your tripe any longer. We can disagree without being disagreeable but I am not sure you can
