Question Gassing the Kurds

This goes way back, but I do too. I recall that when the Kurds were gassed, the government, CIA, blamed it on Iran. Am I having a senior moment?

I think Saddam was behind chemical warfare on the Kurds. However at that point in time our CIA did have a report that pointed a finger at Iran. I am not clear but later it was revealed this was to protect Saddam because at that point in time we were his friend and supplying him with weaponry.

You raise a good point and I am not clear if this was an attempt at deceipt from the CIA to protect Saddam or if they believed it was Iran.

The first time I ever heard that Hussein had gassed the Kurds was leading up to this war. I'm curious if he was not tried for that because it can't be proved. Maybe no one knows for sure who did it.

Rumsfeld is an complex and a study in contradictions. I wondered if he partied
while he watched the hanging. We know he enjoys fine wine because he toasted with Saddam on a visit even after he knew of the use of chemical weapons on the Kurds.

Again this is no defence of Saddam just a little confusion on Rumsfeld and his morals.

When unexpectly questioned about his meeting with Saddam Rumsfeld claimed he had expressed dismay to Saddam over use of chemical weapons on the Kurds. Gosh when will these guys ever learn that when they lie they will be caught. Transcripts were later declassified of the conversations and never once did was this issue raised by Rumsfeld.

Dismay...hmm...but they did not bother to prosecute Saddam over these killings...funny...this was one fo the main selling points of the war.

Actually he said he expressed dismay when questioned in 2004 but the transcripts and recordings do not support the 2004 recall Rumsfeld had of his meetins with Saddam.

Iran has Kurds as well and I believe they did kill many of them under the Ayatollah.

Yes probably but wasnt that a different time period and war than the time that Saddam gassed the Kurdish Village? I think they were plotting against him but from what I read he gassed an entire village with no mercy on innocents or women and children. He later expressed sorrow on the collateral damage that occurs during wars. I guess that was Saddams shock and awe.

Am I correct at the point in time Saddam gassed the Kurds Iran was backing that region of Kurdish Villages?
