Default Winning the war

The American people thought that Shock and Awe with the Air Force can win wars. But the truth of the matter is that only when you put all combant branchs on the ground with the will to win will a war be won. Also the entire population needs to back the war.

Rob,

I don't think that we (the US) were very well prepared for the aftermath.....after "shock and awe", after the rapid destruction of the horribly outclassed Republican Guard, after the quick fall of Baghdad, etc....We did all these things well, as you would expect. Then we ran into an insurgency.

Insurgencies are tough especially in very foreign areas. They tend to nullify our technological advantages. And, as you pointed out, there is really no "hi-tech" replacement for boots on the ground.

To win the war in Iraq ,democracy would have to take hold and survive after we go home,I didn't think that was possible when we illegally invaded and I don't think that its possible now!Iraq is one of those places where democracy will not work, because of the history and nature of the people!
History will show that Bush's insane attempt to change the 1000's yrs of history in Iraq,is the biggest waste of life, time, and money in the history of America. But what do you think would happen when you elected,a trigger happy, simpleminded, messiah complexed ,idiot for President because the only qualifications is his last name! If his name would have been Joe Jerkoff
he would have been what he really is,a drunken Texas used car salesman!

"Iraq is one of those places where democracy will not work..."

>>>It could possibly work WITHIN sects, but it will NEVER work as long as Sunnis and Shias want control of the country. It ain't like Republicans vs. Democrats or Whigs vs. Tories.

Yes we should never attempt to change a country whose religious, cultural and political structure is so different from ours. It would never work. The people will always want to be slaves. Who in thier right mind would think that someone like the Japanese would ever change from their historical roots.

nathanbforrest45,

Look, Japan and Iraq are very, very different situations. The following logic- it worked for Situation X....it will work for Situation Y - is very faulty logic especially in the realm of geo-politics. Unfortunately, I believe that many of those in charge made this exact same mistake.

I do not beleive that the American people have the stomach to fight and win this war. The military knows how to win but do we want to win at all costs?
