The war was lost at home, not on the battlefield. The US did not lose one single engagement in VietNam, this is part of the reason why Saddam was so confident of his position. He saw us cut and run after only losing 58,000 troops while winning the battles, to him this was nothing short of insane and a sign of weakness.
