Red Cross slams 'critical' situation in post-invasion Iraq - Yahoo! News

GENEVA (AFP) - The humanitarian situation in post-war Iraq five years after the US-led invasion is one of the most critical in the world, the International Committee of the Red Cross said in a report late Sunday.

Millions in the country had no access to drinking water, sanitation or healthcare. Decades of previous unrest and economic sanctions had exacerbated the situation, it stressed.

"The fact that some people in Iraq are now relatively safer must not make us forget the plight of millions," said Beatrice Megevand Roggo, the Red Cross head of operations in the Middle East and North Africa.

Although the situation had improved in some areas, Iraqis were either killed or wounded in daily attacks or violence with civilians often being targeted, said the report. Healthcare was far too expensive for the average citizen, it added.

A recent World Health Organisation and Iraqi health ministry report estimated that 151,000 people were killed between the start of the invasion on March 20, 2003 and June 2006.

Other estimates have put the number of civilian deaths as a result of the conflict between nearly 48,000 and as high as 601,000.

My brother is there with a company in the Liberty zone. It is outside the green zone close to the palace. He is in finance and helping to sort out billions unaccounted for. I pray for his safety everyday.

Badhad is shit for most people. Large barricades blocking neigbors who used to get along. Poor drinking water and medical help almost non existent. sometimes locals go tot he green zone for medical assistance.

It looks like a bombed out ghetto so he says.

The military rome around trying to keep peace and hand over weponry to people who they have no idea if they will stay friendly or turn on you. It is a big ass mess and the pit. Some families worry their kids will go with an insurgent gang who would have gone to school except now they cannot go to school. the military there are trying but it is tripe for the most party.

How much more do we send and spend to fix this is what everyone there is asking. My brother is making over two hundred thou just to sort out fraud. We pray he comes back.
