I think your statistics are backwards, navyvet50. The actual statistic is that 90% of the insurgents are not from Iraq. Please look it up.
That kind of eliminates the false argument that we are in the middle of a civil war, now DOESN'T IT? One less argument you anti-war people have at your disposal. Give our military time; they'll eliminate all of your arguments sooner or later and then I will be there with GLEE to break, then smear the egg on your collective faces.

Getting accurate information on this stuff is not easy. However, the Brookings Institute....a well respected think tank....on the conservative side BTW.... has studied it. According to them, the Iraqi insurgency had a "troop" strength of between 20K and 30K from in October 2006. Another DoD study had them at 70K in March 2007. The Brookings Institute estimated that the number of foreign fighters has been consistently between 800 and 2,000.
In a DoD news briefing by Col. Sean MacFarland on July 14, 2006, he stated,

The US invaded in 2002. Knocked the major players "out of power". The US helped build and rebuild the Iraqi justice system and trained Iraqi soldiers. The US has given the Iraqi's the tools they need to succeed on their own.
