But, it goes well with pom-poms. Iraq is now very segregated and heavily armed on all three sides. This has led to some regional stability along with a very weak central government trying to hold it together. I would be surprised if the country holds together after a US withdrawl.....independent of when that happens.

Actually, I agree with you, Tokie. The Soviet Union made the situation very different in both Germany and Japan. Both realized what would happen if the US left.....not to mention both countries were beat down to the ground after years of all out war. And one last point, both countries are far more homogeneous than Iraq...they weren't split into the different competing factions. These are just some of the reasons why we had no combat fatalities in either post-war Japan and Germany and why I think the situation in Iraq won't have quite the same happy ending.
