BBC NEWS | Middle East | Deaths in Iraq 'continue to fall'

The number of violent civilian and military deaths in Iraq has continued to drop, figures for October suggest.
There is no single reliable source for statistics but a number agree on a marked improvement, correspondents say.

They say this is generally attributed to the US and Iraqi troop surge in and around Baghdad that began in February.

Analysts say other key factors are the halt in operations by Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr and the abandonment of al-Qaeda by some western Sunni tribes.

Well, there's probably no response, Smitty, because....well, it's Gix. But, I'll respond to you. As I said before, the drop in violence is a good sign...we weren't going to make any progress until that happened. So, what does that data for 2007 look like? The fact that there is a drop in violence at this point in time would be consistent with previous years (remember....we've already had this discussion). In 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006, we saw a pretty significant drop in the violence around November....probably due to Ramadan (IMHO). How does 2007 compare to the previous years both in magnitued and trend??

There are drops and spikes and this year we have an all time high of deaths and money spent for all those wmd and al quaeda in iraq.
