Three against3,000
Three against3,000
Bucks County Courier Times
Thousands of anti-war protesters surged onto the rain-soaked lawn of the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. It was Saturday. Skies were gray and, across the street, so were the faces of the counter-protesters. All three.
“We would have more people but there were conflicts in scheduling,” Joyce Fisher said at a lonely sidewalk outpost at Seventh and Market streets.
She wore a button on her coat — “Surge to Victory” — and lifted a hand-lettered sign, “WE GAVE [PEACE SIGN] A CHANCE — WE GOT 9/11.”
The sign did not bait the Big Media, which preferred trolling the sea of colorful marchers who cavorted, blew horns and banged drums.
“You will notice that the National Park Service police are on that side of the street, and not ours,” Fisher bragged.
“That's because there are 3,000 of them,” I said, pointing to the protesters, “and only three of you.”
“That, too,” she said.
The protesters passed us. Their signs bashed Bush and the war. “WAGE PEACE.” “SURGE THEM HOME.” “THE WAR IN IRAQ IS A WAR FOR ISRAEL.”
The pro-warriors were glum.
“Over here, they scream for peace, but when they are over there, they encourage jihadism,” said Raoul Deming, whose daughter serves in the Navy.
Bob Kurth of Sewell, N.J., held an American flag.
“You cannot support the troops if you are working toward their failure. These people should be in Iraq protesting al-Qaida,” he said.
Every few minutes, a protester approached the trio to argue. Fisher held a large American flag on a pole. She positioned herself so the strong breeze would make the flag slap the protester in the face.
“I don't care for these people,” she said. “I have been to Walter Reed [Army Medical Center], where they hold signs that say "Maimed for a lie.' The soldiers and their families see that. These people are vicious.”
About then, the Rev. Al Krass from Levittown, who traveled to the city to join the protest, stepped from the crowd and warmly greeted me.
Afterward, I turned to the three pro-warriors and shrugged.
“He's a good guy,” I said.
The passing crowd grew larger and noisier. The trio huddled. “What shall we shout?” one of them asked. They decided on “Traitors, go home!” which they belted out in unison above the banging, singing and chanting.
This bothered some of the protesters, who countered with angry shouts and put-downs. The police quietly calmed them.
Kurth noticed how few American flags were carried by the anti-warriors. He shouted, “Where are your American flags? Did you burn them all in the '60s?”
Middle fingers were raised at him.
Suddenly, seven men in bright green hats emblazoned with “National Lawyers Guild LEGAL OBSERVER” arrived and stood in front of the trio. More arrived, until there were 13 “legal observers” in all.
They formed a wall in front of Fisher, Deming and Kurth, blocking the media from seeing the pro-war signs. Again, the cops broke it up.
Kurth called the green hats Communists, and one of the 13 smiled and tipped his hat at us.
It was like this through the afternoon — three against 3,000.
Kurth waved his American flag at them.
“That's the problem with democracy. Sometimes the majority is wrong,” he said, as a protester across the street shot him the finger.

During the Revolutionary War ONLY 36% of the population supported the war. Thank God they were wrong then also.

In other words, three (count them, three) republicans had the courage of their convictions.

And did the 3000 have convictions or propaganda to move them along?

You are partly right Diz... 36% of property owning literate white men supported the revolution. That is... those with a voice and a vote.
I wonder what the percentage of property owning white men was to that of all others, women, non Europeans, those too poor to own property... you know, those that bore the brunt of the war... what was that ratio?
I bet it was more than two thirds of the population. and what was their opinion? And of those who were against it, was it because they preferred the corrupt system of tyranny at every level, to freedom? Or was it because they thought it had no chance of succeeding, either the war or the resulting free thirteen colonies? Thus leaving open the possibility that most wished for freedom regardless of their reasons for opposing revolution.
Amazing what a little bit of fear and conditioning can do to a society that they would choose status quo over freedom and individual sovereignty. Seems like a no-brain-er doesn't it?
Revolution is exactly what is called for now. Not a violent overthrow per se... but the restoration of our republic, the restoration of our good name in the world, and the restoration of "We the People" as the deciders.
