I remember the '92 Republican convention featuring people like Robertson and Buchanan and thought to myself that this was not representing the American people. This was representing the far-right of the party. It was almost comical because it was what Democrats said it would be and while I was only 22 at the time I realized that if the Republicans didn't moderate themselves they'd never win anything again. I protested in my own way in '92 and voted for Perot. I supported and still support a flat-tax which was his big issue. They have made some strides in doing so. Giuliani who is the current front-runner is a fiscal conservative but a social liberal (like me). At this rate, he seems to be in line for the nomination in '08 and in my view is the only candidate capale of beating Hillary. The Democrats are in that same situation now. The "far left" has taken the party over. There weren't nearly enough Democrats issuing harsh statements about MoveOn.Org's repulsive ad about General Patreaus because if they do they lose the financial advantages of being associated with them. Look what they did with John Edwards wife recently. Look what they did to Joe Liebermann because he dared bucked the system. Like the Republicans had to at that time, the moderate portion of the Democratic Party is going to have to sit down and decide if they want to take their party back or not. The current Congressional Approval rate 11%. Bush is a robust 29% and General Patreaus is at an astounding 61%.
As far as people "sitting in the middle", it is my belief that the majority of Americans are issues oriented as opposed to party oriented. Another words, I woulld never be considered a "true" Republican in some circles because I'm pro-choice, an agnostic (but I believe in something!!!), support gay marriage, wider stem-cell reearch and other issues which don't bear repeating here. However, the issues most important to me at this time are terrorism, the War in Iraq (same thing really), taxation, children's rights and judges. If there was a Democrat who came along and supported some of these issues and not just blow sunshine up my ass I'd support him/her. I'm not particularly impressed with the majority of the Republican Party these days and I'm certainly not happy with the Democratic Party these days. I believe that the people will rise up and make some of these dip-shits occupying space (and little else) in Washington either get their shit together or vote them out. 11% approval tells me that all is not well.
