There are 5X as many Jews living in America as there are in Israel. I don't know what the count is around the world.

My question is this: why should America guarantee Israel's right to exist as a homeland for the Jews when the Jews won't live there?

The bigger question (IMO) is why do we hang on to so much historical baggage/superstition? There's no easy quick answers. Part of it is the legacy of colonialism....
