What does it mean to be an American?
The vast majority of people posting are Americans, so I am going to post this question to you but our international members can answer also. What does it mean to you to an American?
For me it means that I was born in a nation where I can go as far as my talents and abilities will take me.
Let me hear from you guys

What does it mean to be an American?
It means to put all of your focus on prime time tv and nothing matters more than predicting who will be the winner of American Idol this week.
It means that America is #1 and its government is trustworthy because we have been conditioned to think that.
I means "No child left behind" and dumbing down the population.
It means taking pride in either being a left winger or a left winger and either being a fan of CNN or Fox News.
It means giving up your freedom and liberty and that the terrorists are coming to get you because they oppose your freedom even though its our government whom is taking it away from you.
It means having military troops on every square mile of the planet.
It means that the soldiers are dispensable and that they should be in other countries such as Iraq to fight for Iraq's freedom and that our president has stated that Osama Bin Laden is no longer an issue.
It means always having a new luxury car or SUV no matter how much you make.
It means blaming things on the party that you didnt vote for.
It means that slavery in America didnt end, its just been moved to China.
It means that a fetish called "Gay" is treated as if it were a race and that if you dont welcome it you are a racist monster and that you probably go to church to learn about all of those bad things like the 10 commandments.

Wow Petey I think you really have issues.
What does it mean to be an American
It means that I can go to church without being persecuted or jailed.
It means that I can raise my children to be what they want to be.
It means that if I do not like my job, where I live I can change
It means that I can dream dreams and make them come true
It means that I have freedom and liberty
It means that
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness

I love this country, even though I don't always agree with things our goverment does, but it is still the best system around.

I think that being American is having the choice of options that spread right up the ying yang. Some of you choose the right ones, some of you don't and some of you just go with the flow. At the end of the day though you can easily condemn a person simply because they made the wrong choice. I believe you need to limit the expanse of how you define your Freedoms, your Rights and your need to Determine.
