Being an American is about freedom and equality.
Being able to practice my religion in peace.....( I am muslim many muslim friends of mine comment on how it is easier to be religous in the US than back home, because of the protection of rights)
Being able to engage in profit making activities without severe limitation by the gov't. ( i know this is getting tougher)
Having the right to disagree!
May Allah bless the USA!

Being American is sticking your nose where you shouldn't and want everyone else to be and look like you because you believe you are God's gift to mankind.

I tend to agree with petey on this one. Im not American but I have it rubbed in my face daily by our aussie press and a snivelling little man of a prime minister that it is something to be achieved -the americanisation of our country. I guess I should be happy that we are a submissive people or otherwise I could have been living under the fear of another U.S. air strike.

How are Australians submissive? Last time I checked we weren't forcing them to do anything. If you don't like the "Americanization" of Australia, prohibit American businesses and products from coming in to Australia and watch your economy go in the toilet. It's a mutally beneficial relationship for both countries.

Nothing is mutually beneficial where the U.S. is concerned.
By the way, our closest neighbours (asia), far outnumber you in militant secrets and manpower. We could more than live happily without the regular pollution of american bulls#$@ !

Exactly how do they outnumber us in "militant secrets"? Plus, I would think that because of a strong Asia, you would need us more. I mean, some of those Asian countries are overcrowded and Australia is kind of big . . .

There are many Americas I think. A great deal of it depends on one's personal outlook and who one associates with. But the America I learned about in school is certainly changing too fast to get used to. Some for the better, some not.
My list would include much of what almost all of you said, including Petey.
Unfortunately like the frog in the pot, many changes also occur without us realizing it. We must remember that America has enemies all over the world and some of those enemies have infiltrated our highest positions in government, religion, media, pop culture, schools and many other institutions.
Those who speak of America's good points must be vigilant to keep what you hold dear, because our enemies do not want us to have them.

I really think that Lady hit the nail on the head with her list. We can be whatever we want as long as we have desire to work towards our dream and our abilities and talents allow us to accomplish that dream.
