They're not going to try Cuba. Weren't you one of the people who claimed that the war was over oil? Is there a substantial amount of oil in Cuba? Why would you (not people in general, but you) think that we would go to Cuba?

Actually, Cuba would make one nice vacation spot. Maybe would could add it on to Florida as a resort island.

Cuba is a very funny situation in my mind. I like the post and the comparison as a topic to discuss because it has always been a big pet peave of mine in the way of American foriegn policy and social injustice. Yeah, no natural resources but we are talking about an island that should be by all intents and purposes a 51st state of the US (like Hawaii, they would be far better off as that). And, the history of Cuba shows exactly how American interaction (priavte and public) can go wrong just at the right/wrong moment, over and over. Castro is a complete self indulgent jerk but very crafty and knew it was time to 'poke a stick in the eye' of America of the late 1950s, he is the 'poster boy' for the anti-imperialism crowd around the world.
There is such a close tie to Cuba and they are very aware of America and how things work here. Many, many, many people in Cuba have relatives in the US, it is unavoidable and that is the tie. Cuban Americans have some strong political ties here and they want Castro gone as well as the country to be a democracy...it is very hard to tell what will happen.
First, I don't think Castro is going to die soon and what we are hearing in the news right now is very wishful thinking.

I think that if given the opportunity, Cuba would be a very nice addition to the US. As Cat's Meow said, there are already some very close ties with Cuba and they are not exactly known for terrorism so we shouldn't have the problems like we are trying to set up a democracy in Iraq. They are only 90 miles off the cost and I think would make an easy addition. The problem is the government would need to be overthrown and that would be no easy task. Also, it would probably look bad internationally if we made Cuba a part of the US. (Imperialism)

No, I wasn't, although I'm SURE the oil never crossed Bush's or Cheney's minds, eh? I think this war is a result of too many Likudniks running our government.

This I find funny, whenever Cuba becomes a little over populated, Castro lets a shitload of unwanteds out and because you see them as victims of a Communist Persecutional Regime they are welcomed citizens, not like them dirty Mexicans hey. I've never heard of the coast guard forcing them back into their decrepid boats and shoving them off in the general direction of Cuba, hit or miss. Maybe I have watched Scarface to many times and you do prevent them coming across now it just isn't told worldwide. Silly me.

I sure hope we go in there. I am tired of getting my Cohiba's from the duty free shop in Barcellona.

>>>At the time of the Spanish-American War, the Cubans WANTED to become part of America. But they didn't speak English, were too dark-skinned, and would have taken more cash outta the Treasury than they put in. Our far-sighted politicians said "no way, Jose." They thought it was a better idea to turn it over to a puppet who would allow Jewish mobsters to run the island as a getaway for Americans desiring a little gambling and a whole lotta prostitution. Sometimes American 'interests' deserve a kick in the ass.

"Yeah, no natural resources ..."
>>>Back in the Batista days, Cuba had some of the best prostitutes in the world thanks to Mayer Lansky (from what I hear, of course. I was just being born when Castro took over).
