Second hand smoke
Yes I am a smoker and I have rights but some states like California and New York say you can't smoke in public. Some states are actualy trying to prevent smokers from smoking around their children because of the dangers of second hand smoke. How long before Peta and the Humane society say you can't smoke around your pets?

I don't allow any smoking in my home. Mostly because of my 4 year old. The restaurant is non-smoking, because, quite personally, some people are nasty smokers leaving burn marks on things, putting cigs out in their plates, glasses, ect. Now there are some places that are trying to pass laws that you can't smoke outside. So what will this do? Drive people back into smoking in their homes, around the kids.
I don't understand why they just don't outlaw it. That is what it is getting to. Of course, then everyone will have to deal with all of us cranky ex-smokers.

Sorry Rob, but if you still smoke those cancer sticks you are asking to die young (or younger than you should at least). Have you not seen enough proof to see that those things are no good? Addiction is hard to overcome, but everything in life can be done if you have enough mental power.

England just passed a smoking ban on all public indoor places. It is not so bad now becuase pubs and the like have outdoor areas where you can smoke. But come the winter when you are frreezing your ass off, you will really feel the impact. It has really pissed me off because I am a cigar smoker and they have made no exceptions for business where sales of tobacco made up a large percent of thier business. thus all cigar bar have to either shut down, or turn into something that just serves drinks. Dublin is also completely smoke free

I can understand both sides of this argument. I am a smoker. Quitting is the easiest thing to do in the world. I have done it hundreds of times. I do have my own set of personal rules for this expensive, dirty habit.
I don't smoke in confined areas shared by non-smokers. ie. my house, when I am entertaining non-smoking company. In restraunts, I ask to be seated in non-smoking area, because I don't want to smell it while I'm eating. No smoking in my car (unless it's a llloooonnnggg ride, and even then the window must be down some and never with a child in the car), because while I may be careful, I have had smoking passengers that aren't and have had cigs fly back in and burn upholstery. I have only worked at one location that actually had an indoor smokers' breakroom, so it's not been that big a deal to smoke outside (though, I find in the winter, I'd rather curb my habit than freeze my ass off). As for smoking in bars.......I think it's stupid to bann smoking there. It hasn't relevence nowadays so much, I don't bar hop now, but in my 20's & 30's, I had several friends that were my "club hopping posse".
Rob, I will be in trouble if the day comes, my pets can rat me out to PETA. Granted, I'm not a "hard core" smoker. Usually it's 5-7 cigs a day. A pack can last me about a week.
But I do find many "no smoking" rules/laws do infringe on the personal right of choice.

In Austin, it's illegal to even smoke outside, if not surrounded by a privacy wall....That's a bit much..........

That's what I'm talking about. Wouldn't this be considered private property. Who am I hurting by smoking on my own property? My husband and I smoke outside, as do any visitors to our home. My neighbor smokes outside. Do we know smoke indoors around the kids? It's getting ridiculous.

The ridiculous part (about Austin) is, if I AM on Private property, outside, why do I have to be shielded from public view? If someone doesn't like it, don't look. It's not as if I was rounding up kids and forcing them to watch....

They won't outlaw it for one reason...money, as usual. I get a kick out of hearing how they are going to use cigarette taxes to fund healthcare issues and everybody says , "oh, good idea!" My question to them is always the same...What happens when people stop smoking? Think the govt is just going to change the budget? Or maybe they'll get it by taxing something else. Seems pretty simple to me but it eludes some people.
Like the $10 tax they are talking about putting on cigars now to help pay for the "chilruns'" medical care. What happens when the revenue from cigar smokers drops? Whos vice is gonna be taxed to make up the short-fall then?
I try to be a courteous smoker: never in the house or car...always use ashtrays and not the ground for the butt...I'm also careful to not even let my grand-kids SEE me smoking.
The whole idea of govt regulating smoking in private establishments is bull. Why couldn't a person open a bar/restaurant, whatever that clearly stated smoking was allowed...if smoke offends you, don't patronize that place. But, no...some weinie has to ruin it for everyone.
