An American is an American, not a "_____________(insert nationality)-American.
An American is an individual, not part of a mob.
An American works hard to allow him/her to play hard.
An American is generous but not gullible.
An American does for him/her self, does not rely on a hand-out.
An American is self-reliant.
An American is afforded opportunity, whether or not he/she chooses to pursue that opportunity is a personal decision.
An American can get a job if they really want one.

What it means to me to be an american? Besides having the highest stantard of living in the entire world? Besides having the opporunity to become a millionair simply by walking inside the neighborhood conveince store and throwing a buck on the counter? Besides driving one of several automobliles down to the corner, simply to pick up a newspaper? Besides working in an airconditioned enviornment, with sechuled breaks, lunch periods of up to an hour, being able to refuse a direct order simply because "I" deem it unsafe. Besides having my hard earned savings insured for upwards of a $100,000 by the government, for free. Besides being able to walk into any neighborhood hospital, after being involved, perhaps in a serious life threatening accident, and being guar. treatment, even if I'm not insured? Besides having an education offered to my offspring at minimal cost? Besides having a say to what group of people run the country and make major decisions that have a direct impact on my live?........right off hand I can't think of a thing as to what it means to be an american.......I just draw a blank, can you think of anything?.....BD

An American voices his or her opinion ,no matter how unpopular. An American questions authority.
An American supports his/her country by following their conscience.
An American supports the right of other Americans to do the same .

Hmmm, I'm an American then. I often wonder sometimes. But this definition would make anybody with a modicom of intelligence throughout the world an American.

I think to me, being an American brings with it responsibility. All of the things we get for being an American are great and wonderful, but that's the rewards, what is it to be an American.
To show the world that we love this country and that there are things here to love. We have the ability to say whatever we want, and more often than not it's compiled of negativity devoid of solutions. What is our right to free speech if we don't couple it with the need to be informed.
All the rights of being an American mean nothing without the internal true appreciation of the rights and the complete belief that they are worth defending. To know, and show the world, that no matter who may be in charge now, this country is the best place to live and thrive. And even if we slide backward that we will once again make bold strides forward because of our differences.
