Affirmative action is reverse discrimination
Affirmative action needs to be abolished as a policy. Both education and employment should be based on merit of one’s abilities and achievements, not on minority status. Everyone who works hard should be awarded and be able to advance in both their educational and employment ambitions. However, affirmative action keeps those hard working individuals out by instilling a policy of reverse discrimination in getting some less qualified minorities in the door. Not everyone has the ability to survive college or become a CEO. People need to recognize their strengths instead of getting by with their weaknesses, and in turn, dumbing down our society. As a minority myself, I’d rather climb the success ladder knowing I got to where I need to be by my own abilities and not just because of my status.

Which minority? And when did your family come to the US.
Both are important for your declaration.

So what tool would you use to ensure racist hiring policies do not again become widespread in the US?
I agree, merit should be the measure but even without Affirmitive Action/racism there are other factors that come into play.
What should we do about cronyism? Nepotism?

Affirmative Action are racist hiring practices. Why should a white women not get a job because a black woman applied for the same job?
That's why it should have never been a law.

It was implemented to address historical problems with hiring.
Granted it created a new issue.
So how then are we to address discriminatory practices and ensure that those with greatest merit truly are hired?
Why aren't people as upset with cronyism and nepotism? (granted those issues will be even HARDER to address, but this doesn't really seem like a fairness issue, it seems more like sour grapes to me)

I think it is mighty white of righties to talk about how people should be treated, based on merit and not on the color of their skin. Outrage over discrimination finally happening, when a few white people become victims.
Righties like to act like racial prejudice is something from the past, with little in existence today. The playing field has been leveled, "I didn't own any slaves," and black people need to "get over it."
Those beliefs are wrong in themselves, but I wish to address an often ignored aspect of previous discrimination ... Imagine you are smart black man in the 1920s. You worked hard to get a good education. Now, try to find a job that doesn't involve a mop. After a few years of this, do you go home and tell your children, "Study hard, work hard, and everything will be hunky-dory"? No, you don't. And they won't teach their children, and ... sanctimonious, white-bread, suburbanites will someday tell those grandchildren, "Get over it. Pull yourself up like I did."

So how then are we to address discriminatory practices and ensure that those with greatest merit truly are hired? Simply by looking at the paper in front of them instead of at the person (if an interview). All of us who applied to college and/or jobs had to present resumes, academic records, recommendations, etc., illustrating on paper what each of us are capable of.
Why aren't people as upset with cronyism and nepotism? (granted those issues will be even HARDER to address, but this doesn't really seem like a fairness issue, it seems more like sour grapes to me) I think we are but you're right that it is harder to prove, there's no paper trail.
