I do wonder why white women suffer from post partum depression more so than other ethnic groups or is it just the media? Anyway, when Susan Smith originally came on TV and declared "return my babies" I had a gut feeling she did it with criminal intent. But, when I look at Andrea Yates, she truly looks not to be of sound mind. Post Partum has been around since the beginning of time, wonder why they haven't had a way to detect who is more prone to it and who isn't. I personally never had post partum with either of my 2 kids.

My guess is that we just hear more about white women based on the following data.

Here are some statistics from the US CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) on Postpartun Depression by age and race. This data is from within the US. many states do not keep statistics based on demographics, so this is from a reduced data set.

It would appear that by race, Black women suffer the most from severe depression.

By age, it seems that women 20-24 suffer the most severe depression closely followed by women under 20.

By Age
Less than 20
34.0%, reported no postpartum depression;
57.1%, reported low to moderate postpartum depression;
8.9%, reported severe depression

Age 20–24
37.5%, reported no postpartum depression;
52.4%, reported low to moderate postpartum depression;
10.0%, reported severe depression

Age 25–34
43.2%, reported no postpartum depression;
51.0%, reported low to moderate postpartum depression;
5.8%, reported severe depression

Age 35 plus
47.0%, reported no postpartum depression;
47.6%, reported low to moderate postpartum depression;
5.3%, reported severe depression

By Race

White
41.1%, reported no postpartum depression;
52.3%, reported low to moderate postpartum depression;
6.6%, reported severe depression

Black
42.2%, reported no postpartum depression;
48.3%, reported low to moderate postpartum depression;
9.5%, reported severe depression

Other
39.2%, reported no postpartum depression;
52.1%, reported low to moderate postpartum depression;
8.7%, reported severe depression

More information on these statistics can be found at:

Thanks for the stats Hodge. No wonder I didn't suffer from post partum...I was 28 and 30 when I had the kids. So, I wonder why other ethnic groups don't kill their children because of post partum as much as their white counterparts or again, media exposure?

It would seem that older, more mature women suffer less. Maybe because they are in a better position economically and emotionally to be mothers. I do not know.

It would seem though, based on this limited data that we should hear more about blacks having the disease than whites. Maybe it is like the exposure that kidnapped white girls get whereas we don't hear much about kidnapped black girls.

Media racism? I wish I knew. It is tragic.

On a lighter note, personally, my wife and I never wanted to kill our kids until they were teenagers! And both of mine are still teens (though one turns 20 in 4 days)! There may be hope!

We've been told we are still the "easier years" the girls are 8 and almost 11 years old...though I remind them, jokingly, I brought them into this world, I can take them out!

Cherish these years! The years of 6 to 12 were my favorites! They love you, want to spend time with you and aren't embarrassed by you.

But your time is comming!

I must say that I have been blessed though. While my girls have caused me some grief, they are good, in school, reasonably polite, not on drugs and supposedly abstinent. Knock on wood.
