Edwards: Americans should sacrifice their SUVs
August 29, 2007 07:46 EDT

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards told a labor group he would ask Americans to make a big sacrifice: their sport utility vehicles.

The former North Carolina senator told a forum by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, yesterday he thinks Americans are willing to sacrifice.

Edwards says Americans should be asked to drive more fuel efficient vehicles. He says he would ask them to give up SUVs.

Edwards got a standing ovation when he said weapons and equipment used by America's military needs to be made in the United States. He says tanks and ammunition for M16 rifles are being made in other countries.

He says jobs that provide equipment for America's defense need to be made in the United States.
Finally some one who believes things should be made in America! But i am not giving up my American-Union built Jeep just yet

Default 30 Mpg

I was getting better than 30 miles per gallon in both my American Motors Hornet, and Gremlen back in the early 70's. Then the government required extensive antipollution remedies. This did decrerase the mount of smog per gallon, but also decreased the amount of Miles. Instead of putting bandaids on bandaids that result in minimal improvements, we need to change the paradigm onece again and go to alternate means of operating vehicles. And yes the technology is there. The electric sportscar company in California is producing an electric car with a 200 mile range and batteries that charge from household current and can be recharged up to 500 times before the charge capacity starts to decline. Thats over 100,000 miles.

I agree with him. Not bc I am pushing for him to win the Dem nom, but bc I think he is right and we all know it deep down even if we don't want to admit it.

What we should have is the most efficient SUVs and produce them in America in Union shops. And the Scab labor should be shot. Those wage and benefit cutting dumb ass Scabs. I support the 2nd amendment also, for just such occasions.

Well, let me ask you this...with republicans being so pro oil, just how do you think you're going to get cars which use less oil at a price everyone can afford?
