I am not sure how much the people of Pakistan were with us even from the beginning. I think it was more of President Musharraf who wanted to cooperate with US forces. From the beginning many in Pakistan had sympathies for bin-Laden it seemed. Maybe Musharraf is feeling pressure from people who not only view this as not their fight, but are tired of the defeats of their army by Taliban forces.
It would be beneficial to have Pakistan working with us, but I don't know if they ever considered the US as an ally anyway. I can't remember what was done maybe a year ago (maybe someone can tell me what I may be thinking of here), but it seemed that the US did something (or made a decision on something?) which was beneficial to India, and I am pretty sure the Pakistanis were not too happy about that. I remembered hearing something about it at the time but can't seem to recall.
