The Phil Mickelson vs Tiger Woods Debate
Is it just me, or is anyone else tired of hearing about how Lefty is supposed to challenge Tiger, year after year??

The media has for years now tried to create a rival for tiger...lee westwood, Sergio, adam scott, Luke donald, paul casey, henrik stenson, etc, etc, etc. Tiger has 12 majors and counting. All of these others have zero. Maybe they think Golf is boring if tiger wins almost everything, but I love watching him dominate. When he eventually breaks Jack's records (and he will) we will have been lucky to watch such a superior athlete.
Several years ago there were ther big four (Phil, Vijay, Ernie and Retief) and of all those guys only Phil has done anything of late in the majors. Vijay, ernie and retief have completely fallen off the map and now the soup de jour is furyk but I doubt he will push tiger either. The only one that pushes tiger, is tiger. Its time for him to take out his two iron and pistol whip the field tomorrow just like he did at hoylake last year. when he is in the hunt and truly on his game, all these guys falter

There have only been two other golfers in the history of the sport to compare with any kind of a standard in relation to Tiger.....Bobby Jones....Jack the Bear....and the only reason they compare is for the same reason that Tiger excels. It's not his skill level.....golf is like NASCAR.....all have the proverbial "GAME" to be at the level in which they compete...all are "equipped" the same....with a club and a ball.....the difference is that which transcends skill...that thing that rests between his ears...his "BRAIN"....in fact I would place the reason for his success more with his Mother and her teachings of how to mold oneself into the natural surroundings that one encounters throughout life....Tiger has the "perfect" mind of a champion.........just has did Jack....and Bobby. There are "many" that possess his "skills" but there a none thats knowns how to incorporate them into into "W's" more than does Tiger....the only "flaw" in his game.....the flaw that has been the handi-cap of many.....the breakdown of his putting.....as he ages...as happens to most the first thing to suffer is the ability to put the ball into the whole as the pressure of the moment catches up with all......none will argue that when Tiger is putting....there is no one with the ability to defeat him....but with age as with everyone...that which one paid no attention to in "YOUTH" with the chances that youth takes...caution creeps in and rears its ugly head...its just a fact of nature...the more one ages the less chances one takes....it overtakes everyone....even Tiger....if his mental ability can overcome this happening he will be the "greatest" of all time....right now he is the "greatest" of his time......BD

Excellent post!! I really wish the sports media would get this through their heads. Tiger is Tiger's only competition when he is on. Hell, even when he is off, per sey, he places in the top, what, five??
I will agree with his putting.

Tigers dominance since his professional debut in 1997 has led to a new phenomenon in golf championships, lengthening, or what's euphemistically known as, "Tiger proofing" golf courses.
But here's the rub. Lengthening golf courses may have reduced Wood's sub-par scores, but it also reduces the number of golfers who are able to win. This perversely gives Woods an even better chance of winning.
Point is, by the PGA Tiger proofing the Golf Courses specifically targeting Tigers talents and dominance in order to make it more difficult for Tiger to win, what does that say about how Jack Nicklaus dominated the 60's, 70's, and early 80's......during this time frame, did the PGA make sweeping steps to NICKLAUS PROOF the Golf courses! I THINK NOT! or least I haven't found any evidence of this thru INTERNET research.
I say when the PGA tour made the move and decision to TIGER PROOF the golf courses, they automatically admitted that TIGER IS THE GREATEST GOLFER EVER!!!!!! thus already replacing Jake-the-Bear, b/c Nicklaus did not have to play under the same conditions.
During Nicklaus playing days, Jack did not have to change his game during his years of dominance b/c the PGA purposely changed the Golf courses to make it more difficult for Jack to win during the 60's and 70's.
Given the long past historical racists behavior and rules of the PGA Tour one might see the move to TIGER Proof the golf courses was done so to make it difficult to own the major PGA records "Like Jacks" 18 PGA Majors Title as well as rewritting the records set by Bobby Jones and etc!

I can see some are "PARROTING" opinions of the web sites.....such as Tiger Proofing....the fact is Tiger is not the longest player in the sport....there are several that are far superior in getting of the tee...with concistency....self admitted..in fact Tiger is 21st on the tour this year in length....and not even in the top 50 in accuracy....the top 5 in distance are...1.Bubba Watson 315 yards....2. JB Holmes 312....3.John Daly 310....4. Garrigus 309 5. Gutshewski 303.
Accuracy. 1. Coceres...2. Furyk 3. Funk 4. Z. Johnson 5. Riley
Putting again Tiger is not in the top 50......
In fact the only top stat that Tiger does lead in.....is winning and money....now how is that possible? Like I said...there are many with his skills and belong to play along side of him...and are his peers in skill level and many are in fact his superior....so what is it....ITS HIS MIND..he simply finds a way to win....he very seldom beats himself......golf is a game in which all make mistakes....the winner is the one that makes the fewest....Golf in fact is a game of imperfections and how one deals with these reflects ones character....as I said...it is the intangibles that define Tiger....a Gift of will power and concentration.....that makes him the best of his time....and if he can stay concentrated...the best ever....but the idea of Tiger proofing a course...it can not be done......for no one can prevent the execution of thought projection. And as far as the lengthening of the courses...it had to be done....in order to keep up with the technological advances in equipment....one can not compare the game of today with the one even played two decades ago....the balls are longer....the glubs are no longer mass produced of persimmon wood...and stainless steel...but custom fit to match the bottom of the swing arc for each individual...and with the latest and lightest metal and graphite....in fact the average driving distance in the 60's was around 250 yards...today...somewhere around 290...its not the players...its the equipment...sure more are starting to consider themselves true athletes and take better care of themselves....but the reason Jack and Bobby and a few others excelled....just as Tiger is doing today....is not the lack of competition but...the lack of any with his mental capacity to win..under any conditions. What other proof of this "Tiger proofing" do you have besides lengthening courses? Lengthening the course would actually limit the number of people who could win a tournament.

Which makes him far and away the best golfer today. And he could end up the best ever.
