But I do have a bone to pick.
I always say that when you saw Larry Bird you probably saw only one of him, When you saw Jordan there was probably three of him that you never saw, When You saw Magic Johnson there was probably five of him that you never saw
My meaning:
It depends on what color you were, were you were brought up,how you were

Yes that floating is called "experience". That's why Pete Rose was referenced, to look at the guy one would not possibly imagine that he was of such character. He was an average guy that rose to the top because of sheer will and determination, as his real talent was more mental than physical. The world is packed full of talented people, but it takes that little "extra" to rise above the crowd, and that can not be taught, as it is ingrained into the personality. BD

Junior Johnson. May not have been the fastest, and he may not have the most WC championships, but nobody got the 'shine there faster.

That's what I was thinking after my post and your's, In years past, like an example of Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle they had the tallent, They had a little more then the next guy, But they would also go out and get hammered drunk and still be better then the next guy. But now they can not do that anymore, They need talent,a lot of talent and they have to work at it 24/7.

Ayrton Senna
Alberto Ascari
Bernd Rosemeyer
Jimmy Stewart
Phil Hill (The first American to win the Formula One world championship, Andretti being the other)
You forgot to mention Nigel Mansell, He made a mockery of the Cart drivers and should of won the Indy 500, but missed a shift during the last caution

F1A&G - Nigel Mansell

Default Easy answer

When you say *All Time Greatest* you absolutely have to choose the names that began auto racing.

Nigel was one of my favorites. The press did not like him because he wouldn't grant interviews. I remember the race commentators really cutting him down but he still won the champsonship. He should have won it two years in a row but remember the last race in Austrailia the year before he won the F1 championship? He was winning that race and would have won that year but his tire blew out. I remember another race he had in the bag and on the last lap was waving to everyone because he was so far ahead and it was a sure thing, then he ran out of gas. The commentators were just beside themselves with glee.

Damon Hill was another driver that was disrespected by the press. Didn't have the dashing good looks of his father I guess.

They are groomed like thoroughbred horses from the time they take their first steps, the reward is millions of dollars at the end and the parents very well know it. The athletes are in better shape, this is true, but, also that little extra that it takes to make it on the professional level is something that one is born with and it cannot be taught nor bought. Its like professional baseball, they all belong at that level but the ones that excel are the ones that have the "mental edge", or in some cases discover the truth of "better living though modern chemistry". This idea has even crossed over into the arena of golf, as some have discovered the fact of taking blood pressure pills slows the heart rate and helps control "tension". Can you imagine standing over a four foot downhill putt with hundreds of thousands of dollars riding on the outcome of your next move? YIPES !!!!! BD

NASCAR, a "sport" (not) started by criminals, thugs and murdrers, cheered on by beer swilling fat slobs with gay like "man crushes" on their favorite drivers, (is there anything more GAY then a MAN with another MAN'S number on his pickup truck?) and gum snapping aqua net queens with blue eye shadow, polyester strech pants, plastic earings and white cotton panties from Wal Mart

The object ?

Turn left, and get your corperate sponsor to outspend your opponent's corperate sponsor

Great?
Please !
