I think by bowing to religious rights exrtremists the Republican party has put doubt in the minds of their base and original party values. I think they could end up loosing intelligent valuable supporters by pandering to this homophobic group who want government and religion intertwined.

Well it isn't that I think that they do solely it is that they actually do have a lot of power.

For example, here in California the majority of the committee chairs are held/led by fundies.

The book, The Right Nation makes the point very clearly.

But in the South especially they have too much control.

The downside is that in the primaries people like Giuliani, Mayor Richardson, Arnold Swafaralkdfjaroupaqnegger, whoever will not get an equal hearing because no matter what the fundies will come out and vote against them,

or more importantly, not come out at all.

No you are not listening..I did not say all religious right are extremist I said there is a very large and growing group of right wing religious right extremists.
