Well it isn't that I think that they do solely it is that they actually do have a lot of power.
For example, here in California the majority of the committee chairs are held/led by fundies.

But in the South especially they have too much control.
The downside is that in the primaries people like Giuliani, Mayor Richardson, Arnold Swafaralkdfjaroupaqnegger, whoever will not get an equal hearing because no matter what the fundies will come out and vote against them,
or more importantly, not come out at all.
