Yes, I know it's a late response to your post... You still love me, though.

But being a native Memphian... I have to comment on Adrian Rogers. I was exposed to his church as a young child, back when his church was actually on Belleview (or however you spell it). He was a very good story-teller, and was able to link Biblical scripture to events of the "here and now." As far as I know, he was as squeaky-clean as you could hope for a Baptist preacher to be, and a true credit to the Christian religion.

However, once he and his staff started mailing out requests to its members for everything of value they had so he could build his new church, I squirmed. On the one hand, I understand the need for a congregation to grow its membership. On the other, I wonder what they've done to benefit the public. While the church was on Belleview, I don't recall any efforts by the church to allieviate the ills of the homeless or victims of domestic violence or of the handicapped. And maybe they don't call attention to their community-enhancing efforts (aren't Christians supposed to refrain from such things?), but their new church just seems all-too-showy, all-too-alter-of-the-consumer to me that they build this multi-million dollar church when there are so many in need in Memphis and the surrounding community. In other words, the money they raised could have been spent better elsewhere. The glory to God, in my humble opionion, does not reside in glorious temples to God, but in how the temple serves its congregation. And I don't mean the well-to-do ones, either.

But, as a side note, the three crosses along the interstate really creeped me out. Especially at night, when they were all lit up and reflected against the clouds. One cross would have been nice, and made the point. Three is just gross. Kinda like having three Hummers.
