Is philosophy dead?
This is a topic for people who think they really have a good grasp of the traditional and linguistic philosophical cannon.
Is philosophy over? It would seem to me, personally, that its defeated itself. Rorty killed it, with his theory to end theories. Ironism. Its over baby.

Not in the least bit. Logic, Rhetoric, Ethics are all important and need to be discussed. Philosophy teaches one how to do that. Since society is always changing, there will always be a need for philosophy to argue how the changes affect us.

But Logic, Rhetoric and Ethics (not that this are by any means official schools of thought) have all be shown to be limited in their capacity and reduced to mere tools. What I am arguing, mostly for the fuck of it, is that teaching the philosophical tradition might be helpful, but the progression of philosophy has reached a stand still. Is there anything that hasn't been said? That is to say, what new phenomenon, outside the realm of the outlandish, could possibly cause us to alter this cannon.

I think you are suffering from time compression syndrome. Decades usually pass between great philosophical breakthroughs. Just because we are in a lull now, doesn't mean that anything is over. Saying that "philosophy is over" would be like someone saying after Kant but before Hegal, "well Kant summed it all up.

We're not in a lull, the world is dumbing down and getting worse everyday.

We're in a slump? Are you kidding? This is the golden age of philosophy, the hands down smartest philosophers in the tradition have been teaching the last 50 years. Donald Davidson, Richard Rorty, Derrida, none of these people ring a bell to you??? Kant and Hegel? I mean yeah, they're integral to the traditional cannon, I can't argue that, but there have been a lot smarter people since these guys. Modern philosophers have exceptionally brilliant critiques on ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology which make them seem antiquated and irrelavent and have instead replaced them with philosophy of language and philosophy of mind. All other types of philosophy are as ridiculous as the movie the Matrix, ooooh what if uhm evil geniuses controlled our brain. Categorical imperatives? My ass, Kant you nazi!

Yep. Those kids and their long hair and their rock 'n' roll music, and their comic books!
In your day, you read Shakespeare for fun and diagrammed sentences for the elderly in your spare time!

How about a list of all the posters here who prove my point with every illiterate, uneducated, feckless, unthinking post they make?
