Default Hypothetical Question From A Phillosophy Class I took

Okay, those amongst you religious and atheistic alike, I'm posting a question for each of you.

If you are religious: What would you do if it were somehow conclusively proved that there were no God tomorrow? (I'm not suggesting this could happen, just asking what you'd do if it did.)

If you are an Atheist: How would you react tomorrow if it were conclusively proved that there were a God? (You know, he descends from heaven and says to live like X translation of the Bible says.)

I'm curious to see what your answers to this are.

Well, for theists the first question is nonsense. You can't prove a negative.

For the second, depends. Could merely be a powerful alien, and second if he told me to live like the OT I would tell him to piss off. Rather burn in hell then spend the rest of eternity praising a pyschopath, no matter how powerful.

Well, I'd have to begin reading whatever Bible God picked I guess. I don't want to spend eternity in hell, thats for sure!

You left out ..... agnostic..... which may describe me. I have never subscribed to a "belief" in God as presented by organized religions of any stripe. As a matter of fact ..... I don't know ..... and none of you do either. If the scenario you present should occur ..... I'd then know the truth. You may believe you "know" just as others of many of the "faiths" practiced around the world believe they "know" .... or the atheists who absolutely disbelieve. I would be very satisfied to "know" the truth of the matter...... and let the chips fall where the may.

I'm politically incorrect and damn well satisfied to be so. Gummer

Fair enough. For purposes of proving a negative, you could just as likely assume that a guy with a mask and a gun comes out with God's corpse and explains very clearly why it unmakes any of the objectivity of the universe He had previously set into place. Or perhaps God himself simply comes out and says "There's no heaven. No hell. No objective good or bad. You're on your own, and frankly, I didn't even make this shit to begin with."

Default As a Pagan...

My gods were here before the Judeo-Christian one anyway...

They will protect me from an "angry, and Vengeful" god as I believe he once called himself.

Which gods? The "horned god" and other 20th century inventions :-)

*laughs*

This was ages ago, I just found it sort of interesting at the time to see how people reacted when asked to talk themselves through the hypothetical.
