Virginia University Paper: Christianity Bashing Okay But Homosexuality Bashing No Way

CHARLOTTESVILLE, September 5, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Despite having apologized to homosexuals over a cartoon deemed derogatory to gays, the University of Virginia's student newspaper has refused to apologize to Christians over two cartoons which are derogatory to Christians.

Students at the University of Virginia contacted the Catholic League regarding two anti-Christian cartoons that appeared in The Cavalier Daily, the student newspaper on campus. The August 23rd edition showed a drawing of Jesus crucified on a mathematical graph with the inscription, "Christ on a Cartesian Coordinate Plane." On August 24, the newspaper ran a cartoon of Mary and Joseph, with Mary holding baby Jesus. "Mary…I don't mean to ruin this special moment," Joseph says, "but how did you get that bumpy rash?" To which Mary says, "I swear, it was Immaculately Transmitted."

The League requested an apology, citing precedent: In November 2005, the newspaper apologized to homosexuals for publishing a cartoon that described a crane as the "gayest-looking of all birds." Michael Slaven, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper, replied to the League stating: "Under our newspaper's policies, satire of religion, or any other belief or creed, is acceptable."

Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded saying, "When gays were offended at the University of Virginia for some throw-away line, The Cavalier Daily said it 'regrets printing this comic and deeply apologizes to those who were offended.' Yet when it comes to Christians, not even a shallow apology can be mustered."

"So it can be implied that the Mother of Jesus has a sexually transmitted disease-and that's okay with the editors-but making flip comments about homosexuals is unacceptable," added Donohue.

"Nice to know that the newspaper actually has a policy that justifies anti-religious commentary (of Christians, of course), but deliberately fails to apply the same libertarian policy to gays. Par for the course: this is what passes for sensitivity these days on college campuses. And the new school year is just beginning," concluded Donohue.

I lived in Cville from 2002-2003, it's over the top liberal. I would never live there again. This doesn't surprise me. But, there will be backlash, there is a huge Christian community.

Several years ago the University of Virginia also got into some trouble and lost a Supreme Court case about discriminating against a Christian newspaper. The University paid for the printing costs of all the other student newspapers but refused to help pay for the printing cost of a Christian newspaper. The University lost because the court found they were discriminating against Christians by funding everyone but them. So it doesn't appear to be anything new at the University of Virginia.

When I discussed this with a friend, I was given the old excuse "if they are in the majority they don't need protection." That seems to be the mentality when it comes to minorities of any issue (not just religious, racial, etc.) Besides, who really believes that true Christianity is a majority in this day and age? And even if so, a double standard is total BS. Our culture does not need to support and protect any minority thought or opinion simply because it exists. I think all of this could backlash on a grand scale eventually, which almost seems to be the intended result in some sick kind of way. Keeping us at each others' throats. Or we'll just get used to it which is more likely since there are distractions everywhere and living our own lives is time-consuming enough. This article represents what I see going on all over, not just with Christianity.

sour_claw: I agree with you.

Hubby did a portion of his education at UVA, it's awesome academically, however over the top liberal. It's very similar to UofM.

if the newspaper said it was fine to make fun of Christians, then why did they have to apologize tot he Homosexuals? if all people are created equal then they should be made fun of equally. i can take pokes and understand humor, i may even laugh at it but if you separate making fun of minorities to making fun of majorities i will not stand for it.

If there are so many christians and their god is so great, why don't they ask Him to solve some of the problems---oh, they have asked him....what happened?

What does that have to do with discriminating against Christians? I guess it is alright to discriminate against people or groups you don't agree with.

I said that Cville has a large Christian community and won't tolerate the Christian bashing. So...take a swim in the Potomac.
