When he BELIEVED the lie, he gave it the power of his will.
Christs death was the atonement, or the undoing of the power(belief) invested in the lie.

It wasn't Adam's "EGO" that told him to eat of the fruit of knowledge; it was Satan. You know, the same Satan that tried to get Jesus Christ to resort to the power of God in the desert? Jesus didn't allow himself to give in to the temptation, but Adam did. Neither one was driven or held back because of EGO though; it was because of strength or the lack of in the face of evil.
