But you did relate it to age and that is part of the problem here and the idea of where you are in your life creates moral conflict based on age/wants/needs (more wants than needs in this case I am afraid...and a very sad case at that).

I guess it depends what in particular you are trusting someone with. In my 20's my roommate knew better to trust me with his beer in the fridge (he assumed that I would drink it- rightfully so!) or my girlfriend knew to keep an eye on me because I was exposed to so many other girls. Maturity can be gained through experiences but trust can be broken at any age.
