Teen girl in critical condition after alleged dispute over hijab
by Barry Hertz

A 16-year-old girl is in critical condition after being choked by a man believed to be her father, apparently after a dispute with her family over her refusal to wear the hijab, the Islamic headscarf worn by some Muslim women.

The Post's Chris Wattie updates this developing story:
Peel Regional Police arrested a 57-year-old man yesterday morning after receiving a 911 call from a suburban home in Mississauga from a man saying he had killed his daughter. When police and paramedics arrived at the house they found a 16-year-old lying on the floor without any vital signs, police said.

Constable J.P. Valade, a spokesman for Peel police, would not release the names of either the victim or the man arrested and would not give any details about what transpired inside the large, two-storey home in a well-to-do subdivision.

“We are not getting into the details of her injuries at this time,” he said. “We aren’t getting into any details about this case. This investigation is really in its infancy: officers are still canvassing the neighbourhood and talking to family members.”

However, early police reports indicated the teenager had been choked and that the attacker was her father.

The girl was rushed to Credit Valley Hospital and later transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children, where she was listed in critical condition last night with life-threatening injuries.

Her condition is so grave that police have not yet charged the man arrested at the scene until they know whether he will be charged with murder or attempted murder. He was scheduled to appear in Brampton court on Tuesday.

Friends of the teenager, a Grade 11 student at nearby Applewood Heights high school, identified her as Aqsa Parvez and said they were shocked by the attack on the outgoing, likeable girl, but said she had been threatened by her strictly religious family before.

“She got threatened by her father and her brother,” said Dominiquia Holmes-Thompson, who had known Aqsa since they both started high school together. “He said that if she leaves, he would kill her.”

Ebonie Mitchell, 16, another friend of the victim, said the conflict with her father over wearing Islamic dress came to a head at the beginning of this school year. “She just wanted to dress like we do,” she said.

“Last year she wore like the Islamic stuff and everything, the hijab, and this year she’s all Western. She just wanted to look like everyone else. And I guess her dad had a problem with that.”

Ebonie said her friend had left home once before, in September, for about two weeks. She returned home, but the fights with her family over what she wore just got worse.

Dominiquia, 16, said her friend had been arguing with her father for more than a year over the restrictions he imposed on her, including demanding that she wear the hijab at all times. “She wanted to go out with her friends, hang out and just be like a normal person,” she said. “But he was always trying to control her ... he wouldn’t let her go out or do anything.”

The stricken girl’s friends said the fights with her father got so bad that she had left the family home to live with friends about a week ago. “She was going back, but just to get her stuff,” said friend Krista Garbutt. “She was scared to go home, but she had to get her clothes and stuff.”

Neighbours said as many as 11 people lived in the home, which was sealed off by crime scene tape and surrounded by police cars yesterday, all members of an extended Pakistani family. Const. Valade confirmed that there were other people in the home when the teenager was attacked.

“I didn’t really know any of them,” said one woman, who would not give her name. “There were a lot of them living in that house, always coming and going. They didn’t talk to me, maybe just to say hello once in a while. That’s all.”

The home where the teen was attacked is the listed address of Muhammad Parvez, a Mississauga cab driver. “He was Muslim and very devout, very observant,” said one of his fellow drivers at Mississauga’s Blue and White Taxi, who did not want his name used. “He was always stopping to take breaks and pray: three, four times a day.”

His eldest son, also named Muhammad, also worked as a cab driver and lived in the family home with his wife and at least one child, the driver said. Several people inside the home were questioned by police before being allowed to leave.

Neighbours said the family moved in just over a year ago.

Religious culture is too much with us. We are indoctrinated in it from birth; it is our human bondage. It is like a fault so ingrained as to be part of our human nature. In this, we repeat the same mistakes not because we fail to learn from them, but because we have not changed our ways. Still, we persist in the same pattern - from father to son, mother to daughter, generation on generation - over and over again, in an endless cycle. To understand this is to understand the nature and tragedy of our lives.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Stryker, but aren't the majority of Iraqis Muslim??? If so, why do you believe in putting in so much effort to help them if they are followers of an "evil" religion?

None even come close to the plague that is Islam. However, that's not to say that all those that practice Islam must be evil, but it is an upward battle not to become Muhammad like.

Police arrest father after daughter critically hurt
KENYON WALLACE

December 11, 2007 at 4:23 AM EST

A 16-year-old woman was clinging to life in hospital last night after police in Mississauga received a call from a man claiming he had killed his daughter.

Peel Regional Police said a 57-year-old man at the home was arrested and will appear in court today, but declined to reveal the name of the teenager or the man arrested, and offered few details about what might have happened.

Students at nearby Applewood Heights Secondary School in Mississauga identified the teen as Aqsa or Axa Parvez. Some claimed she had clashed with her family after ceasing to wear a hijab and adopting a more Western style of dress.

According to police, the chain of events began yesterday morning with a phone call from a home near Hurontario Street and Eglinton Avenue.

"At 7:55 a.m. we received a 911 call from a man claiming that he had just killed his daughter," said Constable J.P. Valade of Peel Police.

Constable Valade said when paramedics arrived at the single-family detached home on Longhorn Trail they found a 16-year-old suffering from life-threatening injuries. The teenager was taken immediately to Credit Valley Hospital and later transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children where she was in critical condition last night, according to police.

Police would not release the name of the man arrested at the home, or give his relationship if any to the young woman. A search of property records shows the house was purchased in October of 2005 and is registered under three co-owners, all designated joint tenants: Muhammad Parvez, 57, Muhammad Shan Parvez, 30, and Ahtisham Parvez, 27.

One neighbour who asked not to be named said she thought there were "at least two" families living in the house.

"There were people always coming and going from that house," said another neighbour, Vince Commisso, a four-year area resident. "It looked like quite a big family."

Some of the teen's schoolmates said the Grade 11 student had rebelled against her parents recently by refusing to wear a hijab.

Ms. Parvez ran away from home at the end of September, said classmate Kate Daykin, 15.

"It's been happening for a while and she kept going back and forth. ... She said that it was too complicated living at home and her dad was hard to deal with."

Another classmate told The Globe and Mail "her family was really religious and I think her dad was angry because she never wore religious clothing."

Four cars sat in the driveway of the Longhorn Trail home yesterday, including a dark Dodge caravan with a Blue and White Taxi sign on its roof and a black Honda Civic with a for sale sign in the back window. Old Christmas lights dangled from the roof of the front porch and all the window blinds had been pulled.

Neighbours said they were stunned to see police cruisers and a police command centre vehicle parked in front of the five-bedroom home.

"This is usually such a quiet neighbourhood," said a next-door neighbour who asked not to be named. "My thoughts and prayers are with the family."

One of the young woman's classmates communicated a more desperate view.

"Sixteen-year-old girls worry about makeup and boys, not about surviving," another classmate said. "It's not right. She's 16, damn it."

I agree with NOYB....

The real axis of evil?

Christianity, Islam, Judaism.....

(not the individual believers, but the institutions)

It is a perverse aspect of human nature that we are incapable of tolerating others’ religious beliefs. Jews, Christians, Muslims - exist in mutual exclusive hatred of one another. It seems incongruous that these peoples, embracing three great religions - all sharing the same origins and cultural heritage, the same monotheistic basis of belief, and even having many of the same prophets - should be so totally at odds. Is not the one true God by any other name the same? Is not the God of Abraham of the Old Testament the same God the Father of Christ’s Gospels, and the one God, save Allah, bespoke to the prophet Muhammad by the archangel Gabriel in the Koran? Of all of God’s peoples, can any one of them claim an exclusive right to Him? It is a sad commentary on the history of civilization that the world is too small a place for Jews, Christians and Muslims to live together in peace.

YOU'RE A MAGGOT TOO

Arguments for a Moral Law
Lewis bases his case for Christian belief on the existence of a Moral Law, a "Rule about Right and Wrong" commonly known to all human beings. This law is like mathematical laws in being real, not just a matter of convention, contrived by humans. But it is unlike mathematically expressed laws of nature in that it can be broken or ignored by humans, who possess free will.

Humans know the moral law intuitively, Lewis argues. It is the only law of the universe which they know from within themselves. All other laws are known only through observation, such as the law of gravity. The moral law is generally agreed to in one form or another by religious and non-religious persons. One source of evidence of this was, that even non-religious people in England during World War II believed that what Hitler was doing was wrong. On a more mundane level, even a non-religious person may object that someone stealing from them or taking unfair advantage of them is doing something wrong.

The other claimed intuitive underpinning of his system is the experience of people for something deeper and more than can ever be experienced in an earthly life. Lewis refers to these experiences in himself as "joy" and describes these in his book Surprised by Joy. His argument is that we cannot yearn for something that does not exist. The fact that we thirst reflects that we naturally need water and that there is a substance which satisfies that need. The same could be said of other needs as well. Humans cannot know to yearn for something which does not exist.

Lewis states that to understand Christianity, one must understand the moral law, which is the underlying moral structure of the universe. The moral law is "hard as nails." Unless one understands the dismay which comes from the moral law, one cannot understand the coming of Christ and his work.

After introducing the Moral Law, Lewis argues that the eternal God who is its source takes primacy over the created Satan whose rebellion undergirds all evil. Evil is a parasite on goodness. Satan was and is a supernatural power, who, in his pride, set himself against God. But there is nothing about evil which is not a perversion of something good. That is why, Lewis argues, evil is a parasite in the world. It twists the good things which God placed into the world.

Then the death and resurrection of Christ, the Son of God, is introduced as, in the Christian view, the only way in which our inadequate human attempts to redeem our own sins could be made adequate in God's eyes.

"He [mankind] had tried to set up on his own, to behave as if he belonged to himself," Lewis says of the futility of our own attempts at moral self-justification and consequent need for repentance and "surrender." God "became a man" in Christ, says Lewis, so that "our human nature which can suffer and die" could be "amalgamated with God's nature" and make full atonement possible.

[edit] Atonement
There are many theological theories about what "the point of this dying was," writes Lewis. None is fully adequate to the thing itself, any more than a verbal description of a mathematical model, such as that of an atom, is fully adequate to the mathematics per se. Thus does Lewis make nuanced logical distinctions between core religious truths and theological explanations thereof, throughout his book.

[edit] Christian ethics
The last third of the book explores the ethics resulting from belief.

Jack's ok,
and he's back, ok.
He's alright.
Let's shout,
make a fuss,
scream it out!
Weeee!
Jack is back now, everyone sing,
in our town of Halloween.
What's this? What's this?
I haven't got a clue.
What's this? Why it's completely new.
What's this? Must be a Christmas thing.
What's this? It's really very strange.
This is Halloween. Halloween! Halloween! Halloween!
What's this? What's this? (etc…)
My dearest friend, if you don't mind.
I'd like to join you by your side,
where we can gaze into the stars.
And sit together,
now and forever.
For it is plain as anyone can see,
we're simply meant to be

Closing

And finally, everything worked out just fine.
Christmas was saved, though there wasn't much time.
But after that night, things were never the same—
Each holiday now knew the other ones' name.
And though that one Christmas things got out of hand,
I'm still rather fond of that skeleton man.
So many years later I thought I'd drop in,
and there was old Jack still looking quite thin,
with four or five skeleton children at hand
playing strange little tunes in their xylophone band.
And I asked old Jack, "Do you remember the night
when the sky was so dark and the moon shone so bright?
When a million small children pretending to sleep
nearly didn't have Christmas at all, so to speak?”
And would you, if you could, turn that mighty clock back
to that long, fateful night, now think carefully, Jack.
Would you do the whole thing all over again,
knowing what you know now, knowing what you knew then?"
And he smiled, like the old Pumpkin King that I knew,
then turned and asked softly of me, "Wouldn't you?"

Well at least the Islamic asshole no longer needs to worry about his little girl going out in public without her tent on!!!!

Muslim Man Kills Daughter For Not Wearing Hijab

Friends and classmates of a 16-year-old girl who police say was murdered by her devout Muslim father in a Toronto suburb told local media Tuesday she was killed for not wearing a hijab.
Police said in a statement they received an emergency call at 7:55 am local time Monday from "a man who indicated that he had just killed his daughter."

The victim, Aqsa Parvez, was "rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, but tragically passed away late last night."

Her father, Muhammad Parvez, 57, was arrested at the scene and will be formally charged with murder when he appears in court Wednesday, said police.

The girl's friends, meanwhile, told local media she was having trouble at home because she did not conform to the family's religious beliefs and refused to wear a traditional Islamic head scarf, or hijab.

"She wanted to go different ways than her family wanted to go, and she wanted to make her own path, but he (her father) wouldn't let her," one of her classmates told public broadcaster CBC.

"She loved clothes," another of her friends, Dominiquia Holmes-Thompson, told the daily Toronto Star. "She just wanted to show her beauty ... She just wanted to dress like us, just like a normal person."

According to her friends, Aqsa had worn the hijab at school last year, but rebelled in recent months.

They said she would leave home wearing a hijab and loose-fitting clothes, but would take off her head scarf and change into tighter garments at school, then change back before going home at the end of the day.

The victim's 26 year-old brother was also charged with obstructing police in the investigation.

Here's an added article for the benefit of those that still put Islam on the same playing field as other religions.....as if:

Vigilantes kill 40 women in Iraq's south
By SINAN SALAHEDDIN, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD - Religious vigilantes have killed at least 40 women this year in the southern Iraqi city of Basra because of how they dressed, their mutilated bodies found with notes warning against "violating Islamic teachings," the police chief said Sunday.

Maj. Gen. Jalil Khalaf blamed sectarian groups that he said were trying to impose a strict interpretation of Islam. They dispatch patrols of motorbikes or unlicensed cars with tinted windows to accost women not wearing traditional dress and head scarves, he added.

"The women of Basra are being horrifically murdered and then dumped in the garbage with notes saying they were killed for un-Islamic behavior," Khalaf told The Associated Press. He said men with Western clothes or haircuts are also attacked in Basra, an oil-rich city some 30 miles from the Iranian border and 340 miles southeast of Baghdad.

"Those who are behind these atrocities are organized gangs who work under cover of religion, pretending to spread the instructions of Islam, but they are far from this religion," Khalaf said.

Throughout Iraq, many women wear a headscarf and others wear a full face veil although secular women are often unveiled. Since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein and the rise of a Shiite-dominated government, armed men in some parts of the country have sometimes forced women to cover their heads or face punishment. In some areas of the heavily Shiite south, even Christian women have been forced to wear headscarves.

Before the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, Basra, Iraq's second-largest city, was known for its mixed population and night life. Now, in some areas, red graffiti threatens any woman who wears makeup and appears with her hair uncovered: "Your makeup and your decision to forgo the headscarf will bring you death."

Khalaf said bodies have been found in garbage dumps with bullet holes, decapitated or otherwise mutilated with a sheet of paper nearby saying, "she was killed for adultery," or "she was killed for violating Islamic teachings." In September, the headless bodies of a woman and her 6-year-old son were among those found, he said. A total of 40 deaths were reported this year.

"We believe the number of murdered women is much higher, as cases go unreported by their families who fear reprisal from extremists," he said.

Harith al-Ithari, who works in the Basra offices of the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, said the conservative religious movement opposed the killings and blamed "gangs with foreign support to destabilize the city."

"There is a concrete religious principle that says that wearing makeup and forgoing the hijab (headscarf) in public is a sin," al-Ithari said. "But killing them is a sin bigger than this one."
