I for one would like to hear the difference defined, if you would please, proceed. The scripts of the Bible contain the truth that man is identified as having Body, Soul and Spirit(1 Thess.5:23)....but often the Soul and the Spirit are used as one meaning. In literal translation of both Hebrew( ruwach and neshamah) and Greek( pneuma) mean "wind". In scriptures the word spirit is used in a variety of ways, its exact meaning in any particular context depends on how it is used. When combined with Holy we know that it is making reference to the part of the Godhead....IE the "HOLY SPIRIT", one part of the 3 that makes up such (Acts 5:3-4)....thus we know that Spirit can refer to God, as God is a Spirit(John 4:24).

Now we also know that the spirit of man is made in the image of God. Man was made in the image of God, God is a Spirit so it must follow that man also is a spiritual creature as we are in fact made in God's image (Genesis 1:26-27). We know that God forms the Spirit in man (Zech 12:1). It is the source of human thought (1 Cor.2:11, Prov.20:27). It can decide mans course of action (Ex.25:21, Acts 19:21, Ps. 78:8, John 4:23-24, and Romans 1:9). It feels emotions (Genesis 41:8, 1Sam.1:15, Mark 8:11-12). It lives on after death (Eccl.12:7, Luke23:46, Acts7:59).

The Bible does not always use the word Spirit to reference a being, but it can also refer to an action of that spirit or a state of mind ( 1Sam.16:14, Judges9:23). The Spirit can refer to a pattern of thinking and living (2Cor.2:12-18, 2Kings2:9-15, and Luke1:17). The Spirit can refer to our breath, or physical life (Eccl.3:19,21). Or it can refer to our health (1Sam30:12, Judges15:19). So one must be careful to consider the context before ascribing a meaning to the word "spirit". Many false teachings are grounded to the fact of using a particular reference wrong

The word "SOUL" in the Hebrew(nephesh) and the Greek(psuche) translation literally means a breathing creature, or life.

It can refer to the natural life in the body (Matt.2:20, Lev.17:11).
It can refer to any living breathing creature or animal to include man (Rev. 16:3, 1Cor.15:45). And by extension man (Acts2:41, Rom.2:9-10, Heb.10:38, John10:24). It can be referenced to our "spirit" living after death, Ps.16:10, God will not leave His Son's soul in Hades. Rev. 6:9-10, The souls of martyred Christians left under the alter. The Soul, too, like the Spirit can refer to the emotional feelings, perceptions, and attitudes of man (Matt11:29, Matt26:38, Acts14:2). The Soul, too can refer to the seat of will, purpose, and the decision making process of man (Matt.22:27), and it is used in (Eph.6:6) as being mentioned as "heart".

As I said I would like to see the difference defined between the two. While the Bible tells us that they are two different things (1 Thess.5:23), yet in scriptural use they often overlap in meaning. BD
