Default The Imus Fallout: Who Can Say What?

Say this for Don Imus: the man knows how to turn an economical phrase. When the radio shock jock described the Rutgers women's basketball team, on the April 4 Imus in the Morning, as "nappy-headed hos," he packed so many layers of offense into the statement that it was like a perfect little diamond of insult. There was a racial element, a gender element and even a class element (the joke implied that the Scarlet Knights were thuggish and ghetto compared with the Tennessee Lady Vols).

Imus was a famous, rich, old white man picking on a bunch of young, mostly black college women. So it seemed pretty cut-and-dried that his bosses at CBS Radio would suspend his show — half frat party, half political salon for the Beltway elite — for two weeks, and that MSNBC would cancel the TV simulcast. And that Imus would plan to meet with the students he offended. Case closed, justice served, lesson —possibly — learned. Move on.

But a reasonable person could ask, What was the big deal? And I don't mean the lots-of-black-rappers-say-"hos" argument, though we'll get to that. Rather, I mean, what celebrity isn't slurring some group nowadays?

I exaggerate slightly. But our culture has experienced an almost psychotic outburst of -isms in the past year. Michael Richards and "******." Isaiah Washington and "faggot." Senator George Allen and "macaca." Mel Gibson and "f__ing Jews."

But we also live in a culture in which racially and sexually edgy material is often — legitimately — considered brilliant comment, even art. Last year's most critically praised comedy, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, won Sacha Baron Cohen a Golden Globe for playing a Kazakh journalist who calls Alan Keyes a "genuine chocolate face" and asks a gun-shop owner to suggest a good piece for killing a Jew.

Quentin Tarantino has made a career borrowing tropes from blaxploitation movies. In the critics-favorite sitcom The Sarah Silverman Program, the star sleeps with God, who is African American and who she assumes is "God's black friend." And the current season of South Park opened with an episode about a Michael Richards-esque controversy erupting when a character blurts the word niggers on Wheel of Fortune. (He answers a puzzle — N-GGERS — for which the clue is "People who annoy you"; the correct answer is "naggers.")

This is not to say that Borat made Imus do it or to make excuses for Imus. Even in the midst of his apology tour last week, Imus did enough of that for himself, citing his charity work, his support of black Senate candidate Harold Ford Jr., even his booking the black singing group Blind Boys of Alabama on his show. (He didn't mention how, last fall, he groused about persuading the "money grubbing" "Jewish management" to okay the booking.) http://www.time.com/time/nation/arti...609490,00.html

AYFR...thanks.

This is a good article and presents some good things and mainly the hypocrisy. To me, in the end, the consumer is to blame. Finally, enough was enough and it was bound to happen. Yep, it could have been anyone of a number of people popped for this. Well, others that do this stuff should feel lucky to not be fired like Imus. Is it right? Well, for me yes. I just do not listen to Imus or Howard Stern. Michael Richards? He got popped too and then the mea culpa of his being so sorry, just pathetic. He was the most disappointing one. Maybe some people have just had it and don't want to hear it or see it anymore.

Hey, how about just not doing that sort of stuff in the first place? Does anyone aspire to a higher level of clever humor or interaction with your fellow man without using that sort of stuff?

Well, sometimes the threads/posts on this site show us something about all that.

I agree that the consumer is the one that should stop this by not listening to or watching the show

I will add one more that is important.

The O.J. Simpson book was not allowed to come out and the idiot editor that tried to do it was fired.

So, from both sides there is outrage to this media supported BS...and Al Sharpton had zero to do with that as well as Gloria Allred and women's rights activists...Ron Goldman's dad (grass roots) had more to do with any of that and what has happened to OJ.

Black people overplayed their hands. They have let the racists Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakan, Shabazz, Tyrell et al speak for them for so long.

Now will come the retribution.

I've just about tuned out every black person who screams 'racism' anymore. I've heard it so many times and the double standards just makes me sick. This is the real cost to the black community who puts their collective faith in two of the worst role models, Sharpton and Jackson.

I know, I know... many blacks will say those two 'don't represent me'. This, I believe to be very true. Bt let me draw a comparrison here with the Muslim community. Because the average black/muslim will not speak out against the extremists who hijack their 'cause', we must assume that they do speak for the vast majority of their respective groups.

Here's something I found on the Urban Dictionary concerning 'Rev.' Al Sharpton...

http://www.urbandictionary.com/defin...rm=Al+Sharpton

Al Sharpton jesse jackson racism black louis farrakhan nigger racist

1. Al Sharpton

Another black racist pig that hides behind the term "Rev"! Shamefully calls himself a man of God but ignores what the "good" book says about lust, adultery, cursing, that a man must work in order to eat, etc...

A classic looter! Ayn Rand warned us about these types of people in Atlas Shrugged!

A socialist who is anti-capitalist and anti-american!

The only difference between David Duke and Al Sharpton is that one is accepted with open arms and the other scorned!

The "Rev" Al Sharpton will not say a thing about the social cancer known as Hip Hop but he poor-mouths about the dirty white devils.

Has the good Rev ever said anything about sin? Does he preach the true gospel or a social feel good gospel of black supremacy?

When is the last time Al boycotted the Hip Hop industry and BET?

2. al sharpton

1) Noun. A race-baiting, camera-chasing buffoon who builds a base of political support by first dividing and then galvanizing people by their racial identities.
2) Verb. The act of defining any event, even if trivial, as racially significant and biased against black people.
3) Adj. Adding a racial discrimination aspect to any person, place or event.

1) "Just because you didn't get that job doesn't mean it was racial discrimination. Don't be an Al Sharpton."
2) "That white lady just stepped on your foot by accident, bro, don't Al Sharpton everything that happens to you."
3) "We just wanted to discuss issues in the black community, but he's Al Sharptoning this discussion by making everything about white racism and black victimhood."

3. al sharpton

Obese black leader famous for supporting Tawana Brawley who claimed she was raped by police in the late 80's but was found to have lied. Sharpton claimed at one point to have a witness and other evidence but continually failed to produce any. Consequently, world opinion has concluded that he is simply a FAT NIGGER.

Al Sharpton: make that a 20-piece please. Yes I would like fries with that!

4. Al Sharpton

Another racist asshole who has his head shoved so far up his ass he doesn't even know what real racism is.

Al Sharpton is a joke and the world would be better off without him.

5. Al Sharpton

If you are black, Al is the person you should go to if you got beaten by the police.

Some guy: Hello, Reverend Al Sharpton. Just a week ago I got beaten by the police and they weren't black.
Sharpton: Damn crackers I can't turn a metaphorical corner without seeing a brother gettin' beat by some fat-ass-Elvis-impersonate r cracker.

Racism continues!
