RAP has no comparision to the music of the 60's. RAP condones killing cops, demeans women, advocates drugs, crime, gangs etc. How many gang members listen to anything but RAP - Not many.
It's sad, I'm being nice but RAP just dumbs down society in general, the pimple on the backside of American music.

Maybe they're describing what they see rather than condoning...and nobody will f****ng listen?
Johnny Cash sung about how he shot a man in Reno just to watch him die. Is he "condoning" senseless thrill-killing? Will you hold him to the same standard?

I wouldn't classify all rap listeners as being from the lower rungs of the soc-eco ladder. Look at how many middle/upper middle white kids think they are gang bangers listening to that crap.
I agree, rap music is a dumbing down of our society, but I do like the Beastie Boys (until they got all frickin' political.......ugh).

RAP - eye of the beholder but......
What are the professional credentials of the beholder? Most RAP artists enjoy the freedom that America has but don't contribute anything to the support of the country.
AIDS and unwed teens are among the highest with minorities, Low morals and lack of education go hand in hand with RAP fans. I can't make a rash generalization for all RAP fans but by and large, this is the case and very true.
Almost weekly we hear of a RAP artist arrested over gun or drug charges at some club at 3 a.m. It's harldy ever a Jazz artist or a Blues artist.

A lot of times their arrests coincide with the release of their new album. It does wonders for sales.
Snoop Dog just pulled that not to long ago. Didn't want the "hommies" to think he was going soft. Pretty sad when these guys are looked up to. You could say the same thing about sports figures too.

Never thought I'd find myself defending Rap, but here goes. There's a distinct difference between Gangster Rap, Rap and Hip Hop. Gangster rap is filth and full of violence especially violence toward women. What it actually is is not music at all, but an expression of street poetry which, imo, can be traced back to the influence of Sesame Street. Poetry, street poetry set to a primarily bass beat. It is typical for younger generations to express themselves by way of "music." That older generations don't like it is just one of the percs for younger people TO love it. My parents despised Janis Joplin while I thought she was a goddess expressing my feelings and they just didn't "get it." They also objected to the volume at which I played it, but to me it was "nirvana." My son LOVES non-gangster rap and drives a boom-boom car. Do I like it? Hell no. But it sets him apart from "old folks."
Anyone else here remember Iron Butterfly's "Inna Gadda Da Vida Live" album. The drum solo alone delighted me. Have tried to listen to it since and found that it just irritated me, but then, I'm not in an altered state of consciousness anymore either.
Point is: It's theirs. They'll outgrow it if they have any sense. Nothing sadder than to see some of these 35-year old guys dressing hip hop and practically lying down in their boomer cars, but the kids are enjoying it and enjoying annoying us so just chill. They'll grow up just like we did.

Rythemic poetry........maybe, but it's NOT "music"
Rap belongs more to American Literature than American Music.
