I think it should be celebrated primarily because it is a reminder of the civil rights movement first and foremost. It is important in my opinion because it is important to the African-American community. I think he was a symbol of the way you do things as much as anything. He wasn't the only leader pushing for civil rights, but he was one of the few notable ones who did so peacefully.

Why isn't there a Geronimo Day or a Cochise Day?
Don't the original Americans deserve that?

Martin Luther King Day is a celebration of appeasement, nothing more.

So I ask you the question, which one is more important; a racist person named Martin Luther King Jr.or the father of this great country and the rest of our presidents? I hope you can make the educated decision. This holiday is one of only four holidays that honor an individual. Jesus Christ, Christopher Columbus, George Washington and MLK. MLK doesn't belong in this category. I just wonder if in 50 years will we be forced to celebrate Jesse Jackson's birthday, I hope not. But if we don't stand up for what is right we will once again be forced to celebrate a worthless leader. Most people will tells us how great this person was, when history will tell us otherwise. I think a lot of people feel this way but are too afraid to stand up for what is right. So my question for you is what has Martin Luther King Jr. done to deserve the honor that our country bestows on him every year?

George Washington was a hemp growing slave owner, Columbus was a syphillis carrying murderer of Native people, Jesus? never heard of him, I know a Mexican fellow named Jesus.

Guys, the civils rights movement is important to this country...
So then, would you agree instead to a Rosa Parks Day? A Brown vs Board of Education Day? I think it is important to celebrate something that signifies this...I don't see it as reminding us of a negative either.

I am in the middle of putting together a concert/film series for the National Endowment of the Humanities. I am having to be very careful to include just enough of everything; social impact of people and their accomplishments are vital threads that tie us all together. While there are MANY Black Americans that have made an impact I was struck again by how mixed we have become and this was apparent by 1900, at the turn of that century. The history of the Creole/Cajun community that is south of here is very interesting in this respect; until MLK came along there was nobody (either black or white) who took up their cause for equality. You can't really look at Dr. MLK as just one thing, representing just one people. He really did lead the way for all minorities such as Creoles, Native Americans, Jews, and Hispanics (Cesar Chavez was greatly inspired by MLK). I think it is a bit disingenuous and myopic to think MLKs greatly legacy was just throwing out few speeches and then marching some poor Black folks around. It is very far reaching and much more than we think.

There is many underlying reason why it is not widely accepted ...
One of the least important issues of it is that it is ANOTHER Federal day off !
