My white MIL can't swim or ride a bike and all 5 of her children can do both. So what gives?

"The lead researcher, Professor Richard Irwin, said one key finding was the influence of parents' attitudes and abilities. If a parent couldn't swim, as was far more likely in minority families than white families, or if the parent felt swimming was dangerous, then the child was far less likely to learn how to swim."

It goes back to people really wanting to learn to do something regardless what society dictates.

shows why some sports have more of one race than another.

I think its some interesting research. we kept black people out of pools in the 60's and now less black kids are taught to swim.

I wonder if this relates to bowling. I suck at bowling but I learned how because my gradfather (I'm white in case anyone was wondering) was a championship winner when it came to bowling. all my aunts and uncles learned how to bowl as well. and some of them inherited his abilty, though no one in my family participates in competative bowling any longer.

were black people also excluded from bowling alleys back in the day?

I used to be a BIG bowling fan till I got hurt..............Fell off the ball polisher.

Not to those it affects...

In the Wild,,,Most Species have the capability to learn. Other than Blacks as you point out.

It takes thought, coordination, and mental control...

Haven't got any stats, but I'd be confident in saying that 98% of black Pacific Islanders can swim.

Gee, I wonder if there is some deep-seated physiological/psychological/sociological reason for this??

You've found a possible outlook that'd negate the obvious.

All due to Their personal survival. Not a "Welfare Program" in use.

Therefore, they had to learn.
