Now I agree with you on this one. I actually knew a kid who called his mother from the police station and forbid her to bring his birth certificate with her because he WANTED to be charged and treated as an adult. He got his wish and would probably tell you now that he was a fool. Of course, by the time he got to trial, he was begging for his birth certificate, but the time he went through in real jail made him see what a fool he had been in trying to obtain his street creds.
Am familiar with the Gatesville/Gainsville threat having grown up in Texas. In the small Texas town where I grew up, Gatesville was full so the judges started giving offenders a choice.....Gatesville or the military....Most joined the military and came back better MEN than the boys they had been, especially the ones who went into the Marine Corp. with judge signoff.
Gangster Rap is trash and encourages violence, degradation of women, anti authority and crime. We don't need it, but it is part of the teenage rebellion so the more we talk against it, the more appealing it becomes to dumb kids. I worried about my son especially since he is black and "being cool" is vital, but I wouldn't have it my house so if he listened to it, it was elsewhere. He knew what I would do if I heard one syllable of that garbage. He once said to me, "But it's just in MY room." to which I responded, "No, this is MY room in MY house. It is your home. My house. You are only here because I allow you to be here, but I will not allow THAT trash in MY house." Case Closed.
