Default Grassroots effort under way to force impeachment of Bush and Cheney

Quote:
BRUNSWICK — Organizers of a grassroots effort to impeach President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney before their terms end in 2009 hope that the "As Maine goes, so goes the nation" adage holds true for their plans.

About 80 people gathered from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick as part a petition drive to gather 10,000 residents' signatures in March to launch a congressional impeachment investigation, according to Brunswick resident and meeting organizer Stan Lofchie.

Petition organizers say they hope that number of signatures will motivate the Maine Legislature to vote on an impeachment investigation resolution, to be conveyed to U.S. House of Representatives and implemented by the House Judiciary Committee. About 2,500 residents have signed the petition, led by the Maine Campaign to Impeach, according to the campaign's Web site.

Wish them the best of luck. Everybody everywhere needs to jump on the local impeach bandwagon and get them out before they can do more harm.

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- At Town Meeting Day last year, then-Rep. Bernie Sanders cautioned against a drive to impeach President Bush, saying that with Republican control of both houses of Congress the effort would be "impractical."
This year, the number of Vermont towns voting on impeachment resolutions at Town Meeting is expected to be about two dozen, up from five in 2006. Sanders is now a U.S. senator. And Democrats control both houses of Congress.Sanders still isn't jumping on the impeachment bandwagon, and he's not alone.Sanders, I-Vt., Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., all said through spokespeople Monday that they had better things to do than to be interviewed on the topic.

I guess they need more of a grassroots movement. They are after all politicians and they don't do anything by themselves.

Westminster votes impeachment
Quote:
WESTMINSTER -- This Windham County town became the first to sign on to this year's town meeting drive to impeach President George Bush. At their town meeting on Saturday, Westminster residents voted 107-29 to call upon the U.S. House of Representatives to file articles of impeachment to remove President Bush from office.
But the question did not pass without controversy.
At the beginning of the meeting, Larry Slason, the town's attorney and a former Republican candidate for the Vermont House of Representatives, tried to get the question moved to the end of the meeting.
The voters rejected Slason's amendment, 105-31.

"As Maine goes, so goes the nation"

Just because Maine is full of idiots doesn't mean the rest of the country is. There is NO reason to impeach President Bush or Vice President Cheney. There is, however, good reason to investigate and prosecute Joe Wilson for lying about what he found out in Niger.

Ok, follow the way this would happen. First let's say that we begin the impeachment process on 2 April, 'kay?

The procedure is as follows "The impeachment procedure is in two steps. The House of Representatives must first pass "articles of impeachment" by a simple majority. (All fifty state legislatures as well as the District of Columbia city council may also pass articles of impeachment against their own executives). The articles of impeachment constitute the formal allegations. Upon their passage, the defendant has been "impeached."

Next, the Senate tries the accused. In the case of the impeachment of a President, the Chief Justice of the United States presides over the proceedings. Otherwise, the Vice President, in his capacity as President of the Senate, or the President pro tempore of the Senate presides. This may include the impeachment of the Vice President him- or herself, although legal theories suggest that allowing a person to be the judge in the case where she or he was the defendant wouldn't be permitted. If the Vice President did not preside over an impeachment, the duties would fall to the President Pro Tempore.
"

For Bubba the process took about three months start to finish. Here it'd be longer becaue you want both Bush and Cheney.

So on 1 May the House "impeaches" Bush, the Congress uncharacteristically doesn't not take a Summer break, and the Senate convene's a trial and impeaches Bush by 1 August. Now, VP Cheney is the President. Maybe we played it smart and had the House impeach Cheney in the summer while Bush was on trial by the Senate, but the U.S. Congress (whether Democratically led or led by Republicans) is simply not that efficient. So the House wouldn't impeach President Cheney, effective 1 September. Another three month trial and the Senate gives Cheney the boot before the new year and we have our first Female President Nancy Pelosi!

How do you think that will sit with everyone? No breaks for Congress, remember many of them will be gearing up for the Nov. '08 election soon. Senators McCain, Clinton and Obama would be hampered in campaigning by the two trials. The chances of conviction would be quite low, the Dem's have a simple, not overwhelming majority. Please remember that the Rep's couldn't kick Bubba out and they had more of a majority then the Dem's have now!

This is a bad idea all the way around and would provide a stage to the Far Left and Far Right at a time when those people are being marginalized.

Bush, Cheney and co. will be gone in 18 months, be happy. Whether we get a Democratic POTUS or a Republican one I think the moderates will win. Bringing the country back, or at least closer, to the middle. Impeachment drives the wedge farther between us.

Lying? But does it really matter? It would be a catastrophe for the country. We're moving on, things are coming back to the middle. Let's not start this type of shit storm up again.

I was looking at the stats from the Clinton impeachment. 65% of the Country was against it. During the impeachment and afterwards his approval numbers were higher then ever before.

An impeachment would be a disaster for the Democratic party and an embarrassment to the Republican party.
