Lt. Govenor loses primary while being endorsed by Palin...
Young wins GOP House primary by 304 votes: Alaska News | adn.com
Quote:
In a close race only decided Wednesday with the final counting of about 350 outstanding absentee and questioned ballots, Young beat Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell by 304 votes.
State election officials will certify the election on Thursday.
Parnell has said he may ask for a recount. Election officials have said a recount of the Aug. 26 vote could take up to 10 days to complete.
Since the primary, Young has held a slim lead over Parnell, who had the backing of his popular boss, Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate.
Young is next slated to face Democrat Ethan Berkowitz in the general election.
"We need to wait and see what the lieutenant governor does now. The move's in his court. We'll see where we go from here," said Mike Anderson, Young's campaign spokesman.
|
By the way, Young is currently under ethics investigation... so... the Lt. Gov of the most wildly popular Governor in the US lost to a guy who is under investigation? Anyone see anything odd about this? Or a few things?
Quote:
Young will face former state lawmaker Democrat Ethan Berkowitz in the general election. “I am ‘chomping at the bit’ to return home and work hard for re-election. I have much respect for Ethan Berkowitz and am confident that we will focus on issue-oriented campaigns,” Young said in a statement Wednesday night.
The lawmaker also asked for “outside special groups” to stay out of the general election campaign. “This seat belongs to the people of Alaska. Alaskans will decide who is the most qualified and has the experience needed to represent us in Washington, D.C.”
That’s unlikely—Young is a target for congressional Democrats who believe they have a shot to defeat the scandal-tainted Republican lawmaker. Young is part of a broad federal corruption investigation into the activities of Alaskan lawmakers and oil executives that has also snared Alaskan Sen. Ted Stevens, although he handily won his primary race last month.
Young has not been charged with any wrong-doing, but Stevens was indicted in July on seven counts of filing false financial disclosure forms that allegedly hid gifts from oil executives. His trial is scheduled to begin next week in Washington, D.C.

Well, at least the massive popularity of Palin has helped in the coattail effect...oh wait, never mind.

A recent public opinion poll taken by Ivan Moore Research showed both Republicans and Democrats in favor of the state's first female governor. The poll comes just two weeks after a separate poll taken by Dittman Research gave Palin a 93 percent approval rating.
While political polling numbers can fluctuate week to week, Palin's numbers have consistently been extremely high, putting her near or at the top among the nation's governors, according to Jennifer Duffy, an analyst at the Cook Political Report, a Washington, D.C.-based research group that closely follows state politics.

E-mail from Anchorage pollster and political consultant Ivan Moore:
As promised, the update of the Palin approval numbers is out today. Back on August 9-12, she was at 80-13 positive to negative. A lot's happened since then, and her numbers are now 82-13. So her positive rating is creeping back up, 76%, 78%, 80%, 82% the last four polls since mid July.
Details of the current poll...August 30-September 2, 500 sample, 4.4% margin of error.
