MOSCOW (AP) - Two Russian strategic bombers landed in Venezuela on Wednesday as part of military maneuvers, the government said _ announcing an unprecedented deployment to a new ally's territory amid increasingly tense relations with the United States.
Russian military analysts said the deployment marks the first time Russian strategic bombers have landed in Western
Hemisphere since the Cold War.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez _ an unbridled critic of American foreign policy _ said Wednesday the Tu-160 bombers were welcome in Venezuela, and that he hopes to «fly one of those things» himself.
Chavez called the Russian planes' visit part of a move toward a «pluri-polar world» _ a reference to moving away from U.S. dominance. «The Yankee hegemony is finished,» Chavez said in a televised speech.
The surprise Russian foray into Venezuela was certain to anger Washington and add to strain in U.S.-Russian relations over Russia's last month war in Georgia.

Russia's Defense Ministry said the bombers flew to Venezuela on a training mission, and would conduct training flights over neutral waters in the next few days before returning to Russia, according to a statement carried by Russian news wires.

those bomber you spoke of. we didnt shoot them down and i dont know why. in 1983 they shot down one of our commercial airliners with paasengers on it, and then vetoed a u.n. resolution condeming their actions. so,.............why didnt we shoot them down?

Do you suppose had Jimmy Carter way back when, while supervising the elections in Venezuela, were more objective and not a useful idiot of Hugo Chavez, these bombers would have never landed where they did?

It was Carter who has done more to establish and prop up dictators and despots, since his embarrassing defeat to Reagan, than he has done nothing towards the advancement of freedom, which includes his days as the worst President in US history.
