Read the Pentgon Wars..James G. Burton, The Pentagon Wars: Reformers Challenge the Old Guard, Annapolis, Maryland: Naval Institute Press (1993) ISBN 1-55750-081-9

This book will give you some insight on the waste and mismanagemnt that is a far biger issue then how much and what for in the DOD.

Hopefully something has been learned from the book.

....although the hundreds of billions thrown away in Iraq just disgust me.

We might just have to agree to disagree on this one. The post invasion plan was drawn up as a lassiez-faire eutopia with greed for a few, but however we label it the plan was about greed and opened the borders creating destruction. This combined with the WMD deception hurt us morally, economically and created a humanitarian crisis for the Iraqi people.

True, the government intervenes initially to bomb the path so the greedy can set up an economy to suit themselves with no oversight.

I agree about the common ground on the Iraq war. I am in healthcare so discussions of economic models are usually easier for me in that context. Maybe next week we can open a thread discussing mixed economies v. laissez faire economies. That will be the impetus for me to research. I am not an economist. I am in healthcare. I have a busy week and I will be only posting randomly for fun and I will be out of town next week end. Lets plan on it for next week.
