Free-Trade Chaos: Adios to U.S. Manufacturing
Politicians Don't Understand: Textile Maker Copland Industries Says Multinationals Are Killing The U.S. Economy

The federal government no longer represents the interest of U.S. manufacturing companies and their workers, instead siding with the Communist Chinese government that is putting hundreds of thousands of Americans out of good paying jobs, according to James Copland, chairman of Copland Industries/Copland Fabrics of Burlington, N.C. "The U.S. government's policy is creating millions of jobs all right, but it is creating them in the People's Republic of China and Vietnam at the expense of hardworking Americans here at home," Copland told a congressional hearing. "Our country should be ashamed -- totally ashamed - of what our government has done to working people in America."

I'll share a bit of deception I witnessed on this issue of free trade. I was intensely interested in the GATT agreement in the early 90's. House minority leader of the 103 Congress was Bob Michael of Illinois. I'd been on the phone numerous times with Michael's office, letting them know in no uncertain terms that I considered this final round of the GATT agreement to be treasonous at best.

GATT was a series of several rounds of trade treason beginning in 1947 leading to the final round in 1993 which authorized the World Trade Organization. The bill went back and forth to committee several times. I had a 26 page synopsis of the 22,000 page trade agreement. In fact I had Bob Michael's office copy of this so I'm certain that only the short synopsis I had read was all he had read.

Anyway, it came out of committee and Michael went to the microphones and said "this isn't perfect but it's as good as we'll get" (paraphrasing), and he recommended the house Republicans sign the bill. It passed just barely as I recall. I called Michael's office the next morning to express my disgust and the receptionist says, "sir, you must be mistaken. The Congressman voted NO on this issue!" This was Michael's last hoorah before retirement immediately afterwords.

As the leader of the Republicans he encouraged them all to vote for this horrendous bill. He waited until last to vote himself and seeing that just enough yes votes were cast, cast his own as NO. I can only think that he well understood the nature of what he was doing so he protected his image by voting against this treason.

I guess the news hasn't been heard yet. Manufacturing is returning in a big way back to the United States. FYI.

I should add that Michael was hired as a trade rep of some major corporation immediately after retirement from Congress.

Sure it is Oedipus.

Come on, guy. Tell me what your background is and why you doubt what I said. Can you do that without quoting the Liberal Party line? Can you think for yourself?

You're very easily pleased Oddpus. America has been robbed of entire industries through the free trade scam. I think you're frolicking in false optimism. My post was about exposing corruption, not arguing the "booming" US economy. For what it's worth, I hope you're right.

So, Squawk, you had no basis in which to run you head, huh? Well, I thought as much. Unless you're in the industry... do me a favor and either know your facts BEFORE flappin' your lips or just STFU. It saves a lot of time and trouble that way.
