Its a much less dangerous situtation when "irrational people have bricks or even knives available" then when everyone is packing a gun: and there is no way to predict what supposedly sane people will do in every situation, for instance with even mild/moderate alcohol use. I have seen very good people, on occasion do very irrational things: I do not think all 300 million Americans need to be packing led everywhere they go.
My guns stay in the gun cabnet unless & when they are in use: I do not think any nut-job would do well in my house: but I will leave the nut-jobs on the street to the cops. ...pjwky

Thats the problem. This is not a POLICE state and often by the time the cops get there it is way too late. How many shootings and rampages have happened because there was nobody around with a counter gun to put a stop to it?
The problem is that many gun crimes are committed by those who did not get their gun legally in the first place, or should not have been given a gun. So the rest of us are just supposed to die while someone calls 911? I don't think so.
If more people packed (and statistics prove this) violent crimes tend to drop. Yes we probably could do a better job at not giving nut jobs legal permission to carry but I think I would rather keep my right to carry in the event some nut job somewhere I happen to be decides to open a can of whoop ass on innocent people. The cops cannot be everywhere and indeed we don't want them everywhere.
