They drowned trying to swim hundreds of miles of open water because there was no ice. Also, starving and low weight bears are seen during the summer. Last year was the first year ever that two category five hurricanes were recorded in the Caribbean basin in the same year. Marc Morano is the resident authority on global warming with the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works minority staff. He says media coverage of the ice collapse was both "shameful" and "embarrassing," and that one meteorologist correctly likened the situation to an icicle falling off a snow-and-ice-covered roof.

Morano further states that the media is falsely attributing the ice collapse to supposed "global warming."

"It is such a tiny fraction, and the media portrays this as though it's global warming run amok and we're going to lose ice and we're going to have sea level rise -- when in reality the whole of Antarctica has cooled," says Morano. "Ice extent is at record since satellite monitoring began in 1979."

There is "absolutely no cause for alarm," he continues. In fact, says Morano, the Southern hemisphere has seen a cooling trend in the past few years, and many scientists are actually calling for a period of global cooling. A survey of the animals' numbers in Canada's eastern Arctic has revealed that they are thriving, not declining, because of mankind's interference in the environment.

In the Davis Strait area, a 140,000-square kilometre region, the polar bear population has grown from 850 in the mid-1980s to 2,100 today.

"There aren't just a few more bears. There are a hell of a lot more bears," said Mitch Taylor, a polar bear biologist who has spent 20 years studying the animals.
