Default United Auto Workers

The United Auto Workers vs. California

One of the beefs organized labor has with "free trade" is the belief that countries with weak environmental standards suck jobs away from the United States.

But guess what -- tougher environmental standards also threaten U.S. jobs, or so say the United Auto Workers.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that the UAW is opposing a bill introduced by Sen. Barbara Boxer, D.-Calif., which would overturn the EPA's decision in December to deny California a waiver allowing the state to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.

In a letter Monday to Sen. Boxer, the union's legislative director, Alan Reuther, condemned the measure as "misguided" and said California's approach to controlling automobile emissions of carbon dioxide -- the main gas believed to contribute to global warming -- unfairly discriminates against companies whose product mix is skewed toward pickup trucks, sport-utility vehicles and minivans.

Here at How the World Works, it seems to me that the general public, with one eye on the gas pump, is doing most of the discriminating against SUVs and minivans. But go ahead, Detroit, and blame California, if it makes you feel better.

Shit. The workers should be celebrating. The gas crunch is an opportunity for the auto industry to plump up research and developement and design. With redesigning of more fuel effecient vehicles, this should keep the workers in business, right? Demand for more fuel efficient vehicles should be on the rise, all the American companies have to do, is make a better product than their foreign competitors. Are they saying they aren't up to the task?

The Unions don't get to tell the manufacturers what kind or size of vehicles to build. I think a lot of the reason we have so damn many suv's on the road ...... vehicle crash test reports of 15 years ago ..... pointing out the better passenger survival aspects of larger heavier vehicles ..... add that to millions of soccer moms and.....walah.

Got to hate those evil soccer Moms (except for the Homo soccer Moms). They are a serious threat to all Americans.

Can you imagine a family of six owning a vehicle that all family members can fit in? This is wrong. The global warming hoax is more important than the family unit.

American families should be forced to travel in separate vehicles. This is the only way the planet can be saved!

This report was 1 more piece of evidence of how the Democrat party is NOT 1 party.
the Democrat party is basically a mixture of *everyone that disagrees with republicans*!

If every republican disappeared the democrat party would split into 20 or more separate parties over night! Tree hugger party, Global warming party, OSHA equivilent party, ACLU party, JFK (conservative dems) party, Pornography for all party, homosexual party, nerighborhood association party, etc, etc, etc, Fact is they HATE each other in the Democrat party but are forced to join forces with people the HATE because they hate republicans even more.

*The enemy of my enemy is my friend* is the only reason the party stays together. The largest enemy is republicans.

The Republican party in the last 2 decades has also become subject to this same problem democrats have. However, the republicans are only at the beginning stages of it. McCain and Bush both being examples of how republicans are being split into separate sects within the same party confines.

Right now, nobody wants to declare themselves a republican or a democrat because we both dislike a great number of elected officials wearing the party name.

About 35 years ago I came to understand neither of the major parties gave a fuck about me or my concerns.

The democrats wanted to tax EVERYONE to finance Lyndon Johnson's "great society" and the republicans wanted to protect the fattest of cats from taxation in general.

Both parties were looking out for someone other than me or any others in the "middle" .....just as now..... and damn well intent to "hand the bill" to those of us who in reality have had no real representation.

I have leaned toward the republicans .... not .... because I had any delusion they gave a shit about me, or others in the "middle", but because the "bill" they handed ME would be a little smaller than the bill the democrats had in mind.
