First President In History To Veto Benefits For Vets
On NBC’s “Meet the Press” this morning, Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) discussed his 21st Century GI Bill, which would dramatically expand educational benefits for returning veterans. President Bush, however, has vowed to veto the bill. Webb blasted Bush for this unprecedented action.
The Pentagon has suggested that Webb’s bill is too generous in conferring benefits to soldiers after “only” two years of service. However, as Webb pointed out, soldiers would still have to finish their enlistment term. What’s more, as a recent CBO report showed, any loss in reenlistment rates is entirely made up for by increased military recruits.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and his allies have introduced their own version of the bill, which would reserve the most generous benefits for those who have served at least 12 years. Webb pointed out that it would exclude the vast majority of service members:

Dirtyp, welcome to the real world. This nation has never treated the warriors fairly but in defense to the McCain bill if you want assistance then you spend the time in the military.

You did not list the specific bill.............................................. ........
If this is the bill that would allow veteran family members to benefit then I agree with the veto. If it is against veterans themselves then I would disagree.....
Also--- What PORK SHIT was attached to this bill?
---FYI--- It takes a MORON to not understand that PORK plays a major part in a bill passing or failing.
---FYI---- It takes even a more anxious moron to not look to find what PORK was added to every damn bill that has EVER passed in congress over the last 20-30 years!
So please make your case explanitory on a logical level.... You left a shitload of holes.....

The president didn't veto veteran’s benefits. He did how ever veto all the PORK and bad bills attached to it by the democratic congress.
Stuff so vile he had to veto placed there for the specific reason of making the president veto, so they could scream he vetoed vets benefits.
By the way did you know there was an amnesty for illegal farm workers attached?
Don’t think your fooling anyone. This is the kind of stunt that that could turn the independent voters away. For gods sake, all the democrats have to do to win huge in the fall is nothing stupid and they pull a stunt like this?

How can Jim Webb get any lower than screwing his own son out of Veteran benefits and distorting the truth?

Tomorrow I have my first appointment with the VA Hospital. I have been thinking about veteran benefits a lot because of this. I am going at the insistance of my wife and the fact that my blood pressure medication is up to $100.00 a month.
I honestly believe being a veteran is an obligation to your country. I have posted several times that I thought that only veterans should have the right to vote and I half way really mean that. However, as far as the "benefits" are concerned, I don't think the government owes its vets anything. We owed the country our time and our efforts as citizens. We owed our fellow citizens something, not the other way around. We paid the price of gaining the right to live in the best country in the world by defending it. It has repaid us many times over with our opportunities and benefits of just being here. No, the country is not perfect and yes it could be improved but this is not an improvement that is necessary in my opinion.

That is the dirty little secret. Often times a good bill gets loaded down with pork that has nothing to do with the original bill. So one would have to see the ENTIRE bill before casting judgment on the veto.
Congress does this all too often. They take a good bill and load it up with pork and then dare the president to veto it. It is political and I would blame the Democrat congress if this bill was loaded with unrelated pork just to make political hay off the President.

McCain is wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. How are they going to spend 12 years in the military when geedubya sends them to Iraq and they're severely maimed within their first year? Leave it to a damn republican to try to save a buck on the backs of the troops.
Bush has made it perfectly clear that the troops are expendable. McSame will carry on that outrage.

That's how one qualifies for the benefits in the Webb bill; spending the time in the military.
