There are worse things he could have called her, and that is meaningless. Obama could have done worse things to her, but that is meaningless. What Obama did was diminish the hard work and achievements of a professional lady by using a diminutive with sexist conotations. It is something we might expect to hear from a fat cat company president with a very cute secretary he hired for favors instead of work. You can try to excuse such actions by saying 'I can think of worse things....' but it does not diminish what he said nor does it make what Obama said any better.

Fascinating question about his behavior. What do we really know about Obama? In modern times there has never been a presidential candidate that we knew less about. What I do know about Obama is that he demanded Imus be fired for one similarly offensive comment. "He didn't just cross the line," Obama said. "He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America. The notions that as young African-American women -- who I hope will be athletes -- that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It's one that I'm not interested in supporting." --Obama on Imus

I would point out that Imus apologized numerous times, and it was not the typical politician apology of 'I apologize to anyone who was offended by my remarks', Imus made genuine heartfelt apologies before Obama demanded for Imus to loose his job. So I would say any apologies by Obama, if he made any, are irrelevant according to Obama.

According to Obama, the words are enough to require someone loosing public positions. Just as Imus should have lost his job so should Obama if we apply Obama's standard when dealing with others.

I have 3 sisters and 5 nieces. The thought that some sexist jackass like Obama will demean their accomplishments by using a word like 'sweetie' which is the sexists version of 'boy' makes my sad. That people would defend such actions makes me mad.

How would you feel if I said 'don't worry sweetie the men will take care of this'? You strike me as a strong independent lady who would rip me a new one for such a condescending attitude. The reporter should have done the same with Obama.

Growing up in the South, sweetie is a sign of affection, not an insult. I have been called it by women.

Improper in the context yes, but jesus christ, these people are going 15 hours a day for months on end, I would LOVE to see what you would let slip if you were under the same schedule.

And I am NOT an Obama supporter. I just appreciate fairness and not hysterics.

Comparing Obama to Imus is stupid beyond belief. There is no comparison between calling someone "sweetie" and calling them "whores" on national radio. That you would even suggest it really makes one question your sanity.

A friend of mine who worked at a call center with a staff of mostly black ladies said her coworkers were disturbed by the 'nappy headed' and not the ho part, just to be fair. Just to be fair, Imus was trying to make a bad joke and was not serious. Obama was serious so it is unfair to compare an intentional remark by Obama to a joke by Imus as Obama's was a bit worse.

People who are tired tend to be more honest. So it seems that we got the 'true' Obama. He is not from the south so his use of sweetie would be different from yours. At least you are trying to be inclusive on who can use sweetie.

I used to work a lot of 12 hour shifts and had to be just as professional at the beginning as the end. The job was very stressful so it was emotionally draining. And if I had called one of my coworkers sweetie I would have been in a sensativity class on sexual harassment. It is time that we hold the politicians as responsible as the average Joe.

I couldn't agree more. Men do this shit all the time. It's not meant as an insult. Some things are worth arguing about, and this just isn't one of them.

Men call me sweetie, darlin', gorgeous, honey, and babe all the time. Are they muslim too? Doubt it - just plain men.
