No one is calling for eliminating the taxes at all. Just a short "holiday."
And why, oh why, can't anyone find a single economist who says it will benefit the country in any significant way? Because it won't. It's pandering--a simplistic, temporary band-aid so that people can feel like "something" is being done.

Currently the Oil companies enjoy many tax advantages. For instance, they wingle through a tax loop-hole that allows them to understate foreign oil and gas income. In 2004 a new deduction was slipped into the American Job Creation Act that allows them to deduct production costs--that piece of legislation costs us 1.4 billion annually. The list goes on and on.
This industry doesn't need to be penalized, but they currently don't need special treatment either. Really, do they need tax incentives and government subsidies to chase $100-plus a barrel oil?

The gas tax holiday would save consumers 9 BILLION dollars over the summer. The Democrats can cut back on their earmarks and make the gax tax a permanent cut and use their earmarks to make up the 'shortfall'.
Where Clinton is going wrong is by proposing a back door tax on consumers by imposing 'windfall' taxes on a company with a 10% margin.

This is a stupid idea, and virtually every economist knows it. Any savings consumers will see, will be more offset by higher prices in the future.
Typical Right wing borrow and spend mentality.
Democratic earmarks ?
LOL..that IS funny

Anyone with a brain realizes that a tax holiday to keep prices down during the peak season would work IF the cost was not passed to the oil companies who would then have to raise their prices to cover it. That is why Clinton's idea is wrong. 9 billion dollars. Then when the taxes kick back in it will be after the peak season for gasoline prices.
I think you mean the 6 years prior to the Democrats taking over the Congress with the promises to eliminate earmarks, stop funding the 'war' in Iraq, move to a 5 day work week, and stop corruption and influence peddling.
For 6 years I watched in horror as liberal Republicans ran the nation like they were Democrats. Bush's constant reaching across to Democrats like Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and other Democrats who promptly backstabbed him like the weasels they are. The compromises Bush went with that spawned record pork. In 2006 I worked hard convincing many people to hold their noses and vote for Democrats. I knew then and now that people like you are too stupid to hold liberals accountable like I held the liberal Republicans accountable. You prove me right when you disregard 2 years of Democrats not living up to a single campaign promise of 06.
Are you comfortable with Pelosi selling time with herself for $155,000? Are you comfortable with Pelosi pushing for a minimum wage increase except in Somoa where her family has a business interest? Did you expect the Democrats to eliminate earmarks? Did you expect the Democrats to eliminate funding for the 'war' in Iraq to bring it to an end? Did you expect the Democrats to fight for a balanced budget? For more affordable energy costs? I KNEW the Democrats would not live up to their promises, are you honest enough to admit that they have not? Are you willing to hold the Democrats accountable just as I held the liberal Republicans accountable?
To me it is disgusting to hear liberals whine about the deficeit when both of your candidates are promising hundreds of billions in new spending. You either want neither Obama, Clinton, nor the proud liberal McCain or you want record spending. You seem dumb enough to be an Obamite. I bet you even defend Obama's plan to spend 845 billion by 2015 fighting poverty in a manner that will raise the poverty line so even more people live in poverty. So when all is said and spent the 845 billion will have to swell to well over a trillion. Then there is the money Obama has promised the UN to fight poverty. Plus all of his promises to buy off voters. Plus Obama has said he cannot promise to have the troops out of Iraq by 2013 so he will still be spending money on the 'war'. Plus the Democrats will gain seats in the Congress so earmarks will have to go up.

Speculators, in addition to those we buy our oil from are driving up the prices.
My point, end the taxes, people are taxed enough. If you choose to keep paying high taxes, while large oil companies make fuckin' bank - go ahead.
And I could give a shit if it's political pandering - it puts more money back in the pockets of AMericans - where it belongs. If the government didn't tax people so damn much through out the year, a stimulus package wouldn't even be neccessary.
As far as temp. aid, ya God forbid we should have any of that.
And if people had listened to economists 6 years ago, we'd still be in the same boat. Economists don't run the country, the people do. And it's quite simple, if people have more money in their pocket, they will spend it. Thus, boosting the economy.
And just a note, if you think an 18 cent tax break on oil is gonna hurt this country, and there will be no money to draw from to replace the gas tax - how in the hell do you think this Obama fool will ever make national health care work???? Talk about political pandering!!!!!!!

I support the idea that Clinton and McCain share on the ending of tax on gas during the summer for 1 very simple reason.............................. After that tax holiday ends I think the people will become increasingly upset thus forcing the removal of tax to become perminent...
I am for the removal of any tax be it perminent or temporary for that same reason. People get use to having a little more of their hard earned money back will be resentful when it gets taken away yet again.

True, oil prices have doubled since Democrats took over Congress. We need new leadership in Congress that will not sell out the American people.
Americans want change!

First of all the economy is not bad. Look around you people. Companies other than oil companies are still growing and posting higher earnings. That does not happen in a down economy. We just could not have 2.5% to 4% growth every single year without inflation. Something had to give. Stop acting like spoiled children.
Whaaa, my gas is no longer $1.50 a gallon. Whaaa, my food prices are now more in line with the economic forces of the day. Whaaa. Good grief, are we really that spoiled???
As for the record profits of the oil companies. Well, I would welcome the Fed dropping the tax. Lets face it, the Fed and the States make far more off a gallon of gas than the oil companies make in profit off that same gallon. So if the oil companies earned $10 billion, how much did the government get? Think about it.
The government gets, what, about .60 cents a gallon in tax plus they get to tax the profit that the oil company makes. So its double dipping. So that means the government makes about 10 times what the oil company makes. So simple economics states that if the oil company earns .10 cents and the government gets .60 cents that would mean the government got 60 billion if the oil companies earned 10 billion. Come on people, who is cheating who.

For me, you're right, the economy isn't bad. I own my own business, and because of the housing market taking a turn for the worse, I have regeared by business to focus on many things that the consumer wants right now, a year ago my business was in a different place, but I am making the best of everything because I was prepared for this, yes. Now, did others - no. The construction market has taken a complete nose dive, yes larger companies are making huge profits, but not all of them. Meanwhile the little companies are going under. I care more about the little guy and less about the billionaires.
