I first met Jack Barret......a HAM RADIO friend of my Fathers....when I was like 5 :-)
Jack was a Canadiean citizen.......ex-Canadian Military CODE TALKER Radio operator......A HURON INDIAN of the Iriquoi Nation.....and one of the biggest Jokers I'd ever met :-)
He owned an Antique store on the Napanee River that had like 3 ponds and a couple of lakes behind it.........I used to catch HUGE SNAKES THERE :-)
ANYWAYS......Jack raised minows in the ponds behind the Antique store........where I'd sometimes catch the snakes while they had a big ass minow in there mouth :-)
WELL JACK ALSO HAD A BIG OLD SURPUS MILITARY TROOP TRUCK....that he had retrofitted with a huge water tank (3600 Gals) that he would litterally fill with minnows.....and a little water......HE PACKED EM IN THAT THING LIKE SARADINES,,,,,,,but he also had oxygen tanks that he bubbled up through the packed minnows....so he could drive all along the north shores of the great lakes and sell the minnows to the bait store owners.........the whole round trip would take anywheres from between a week.....if that's all he was doing..........to a couple weeks if wqe stopped to check trap lines or go fishing.
WELL....this one summer we were up there...I musta been 8or 10...and he had drained and refilled the upper lakes to kill off some unwanted northern pike that had gotten into them.......and He took us (Me n Dad) in that old truck up to a place called 5 th lake...to catch Large mouth Bass to restock his lakes with....AND THERE WAS NO ROAD :-)
and we had to go through lakes 1 - 4 to get to 5th lake......with no road :-)
The truck was outfitted with a breather stack on the carbureator that sucked intake air from above the cab like a snorkel.........and the truck had beefy bumpers and was powerfull enough to knock down and drive right over trees up to6 inches in dia.........and if we got stuck.........there were winches on both the front and back.......that we used quit often ...A REAL MANS TRUCK ;-)
IT WAS QUITE AN ADVENTURE ACTUALLY......there were timew the water inside the cab of the truck was up to my knees .......and I was standing up on the seat in the middle.........the water was just below nipple high on both Dad and Jack who remained seated :-)
WE SAW ALL KINDS OF GAME TOO.....deer moose bear. beavers....birds of aLL KINDS :-)
WHEN WE FINNALLY GOT TO 5TH LAKE WE HAD A CANOE WE USED TO GO CATCH THE FISH........AND WE SPENT ABOUT 3 DAYS THERE FILLING THE TANK ON THE BACK O THAT TRUCK WITH BASS :-)
Jack was by far the better fisherman than both my Father and I......for he seemed to catch about 8 fish to every 2 my father and I caught........and when we'd miss a hit....he's say....."NO SKILL" and he grinned :-)
THEN AFTER THE FISH SEEMED TO STOP BITING FOR THE MORNING......Jack would pontificate....."YA KNOW".....he'd say.........." YOU'VE GOT TO FEEL THE BAIT IN THIER MOUTH.......BEFORE YOU PULL "THE HA HA"........and just when he'd SAY THAT.........HE'D YANK HIS POLE AND HE'D HAVE A FISH........and be laughin his ass off as he fought some HONKER LARGEMOUTH BASS :-I
It was on that particular trip we had got to talking about HOUDINI and his claim that given enough time......He could speak with the dead....or get a message back from the other side..........and I bet on....that he could do it
and both Dad and Jack took that bet ;-)
Be carefull what you bet on :-)
