A smalltown parish had lost its church bell ringer and the padre placed an add in the paper advertising the position:-I
The next morning a thump came at the rectory door and when the padre opened the door, an armless man with a battered face, stood before him with the add clenched between his teeth:-O He mumbled that he was here for the bell ringer position and the padre looked him over and before he could even open his mouth, the armless man started yelling, as the paper dropped from his lips, " I CAN DO IT, I CAN DO IT, and with that, he rushed past the padre, ran up to the bellfry and started throwing himself at the bell, hitting it dead on with his face:-O
On the third stike he bounced off the bell and fell out the tower to his DEATH:-OH MY
As the local constable conversed with the padre' and took notes about the strange to do, he asked the padre again " are you sure this fella didna give ya is name"
"NO he never did I tell'ye, BUT HIS FACE SURE RINGS A BELL"
The very NEXT morn'n, the padre awoke to a similar thumping at the door and when he opened it, he thought he was dreaming or experiencing deja'vu for here was the very same armless man standing there with the add between is' lips
And again, before the padre could say a word, the very same thing happened:-O
After pinching himself severl times .......standing over the deceased .....he again called for the constable:-I
"Now your sure this here NEW Fella din'na give is name to ya" the constable asked :-(
No he just ran past like the other fella before I could say a word, but I'll tell'ee this ...........He's a "DEAD RINGER" for that FIRST GUY:-O

SO........just to be on the safe side........They buried the bodies that didn't wake up.......with a string tied around the deceased's finger that ran up to a BELL......above ground.
AND SOMEBODY WOULD BE ASSINGNED TO STAY UP THE NIGHT AFTER SOMEONE WAS BURIED....(THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT)....TO LISTEN FOR THAT BELL........just in case they had a DEAD RINGER :-)
Then the dead ringer......would literally be......ehehehehehe..."SAVED BY THE BELL"
